Harley, I just got this message from a friend of mine. Do you have any knowledge about this?
------------------------------------------- I purchased a short barrelled mule eared percussion rifle estimated date 1850's. It was marked J. D. Griswold Avoca NY, on the barrel and the lock. I am looking for any information about this historic gunmaker. I have no contacts in New York, and I am looking for anyone that may help me on this. ------------------ |

Joefo:
I have heard of a Griswold & Gunnison, of Griswoldville, GA, who made firearms in and aroung that era. Don't know this particular piece and cannot locate it in my records. HJN |

Hi guys,
I found a J.D. Griswold, but not much info, only "gunmaker, Avoca, N.Y. 1872-1882." One possible avenue of research is to use "the net" to find out the county Avoca is in and write their historical society, enclosing a nominal donation ($20?) and asking for any info they may have. I think the larger the donation the more info you may get, but most people in historical societies love to talk about the past, so you might be surprised. Jim |
