1851 navy in .44. what do i need to know. (additional cleaning supplies/methods, favorite caps, ammo) and best black powder substitute (i can only buy substitutes)

Do you have any supplies yet? Pyrodex P makes a good substitute. Where are you picking the gun up at? You might want to just get a starter kit and then work from there. There is a long list of items needed: round balls, powder, #11 caps, bore butter, nipple pick/wrench, powder measure. I like to shoot 25-30 grains Pyrodex in my .44 (Pietta 1860 Army). Powder flask, tackle box to hold all the stuff in. Have fun. Show Pictures.

Pyrodex is the cheapest sub. It's the only one I've ever used. If the gun is brass framed I wouldn't go over 25 grs. If it's a steel frame you can go on up to 40 with Pyrodex. Those starter kits have .451 balls. You need .454's. If you get wads for under the balls it less messy than lubing over them.

The new Bass Pro shop in Manteca, CA has an 1858(?) Rem. replical C&B pistol (8", .44 caliber) for $350, can that be the same gun? My resistance level drops a notch every time that gun pops up in my head. I'm think'n that with the supplies and a holster it'll hit my pocketbook at about the $450 level and that's what keeps me out of Manteca!! Of course, I can rationalize it by saying that the cost per shot is really low!!

Cabelas seems to have the best prices on these. I have had the New Police .36 for years. It's great fun and a fine shooter. I suggest that you spend the extra $40 and buy a spare cylinder in addition to the regular necessaries (and maybe the cylinder pouch jj-21-2973). Do you have a holster?

There are two 1858 Remingtons for sale by a forum member for excellent prices in the classified ads on this forum. Both are very good deals for the prices.
