Sig p220 question...

I am about to buy this Sig p220...

but I have one pretty stupid question...

I have fired the p220 DA/SA, but I never tried cocking the hammer prior to the first shot. My question is this, if I cock the hammer prior to the first shot, will the rest of my shots be nice SA trigger pull, thus eliminating the stiffer DA initial pull?

Since the question has been answered, may I ask the OP a question: Do you plan on carrying this weapon? If so, I'd recommend training with and learning the DA pull.

Chrisman,

Short answer is yes. Follow-up question, as previously asked, is are you going to use it for home protection? If so, would you keep it in SA mode 24/7? I keep my SD gun with a round in the chamber, but in DA mode. Therefore, I would need to practice my DA shooting. When you need your gun, you may not have enough time to cock the hammer to put it in SA mode, so you really need to practice the DA trigger pull.

When you rack the slide to chamber your first round the pistol is in SA untill you use the decocking mechanism. So it depends on if you decock it after racking the slide.

Thank you everyone for the helpful answers. I will be using it for HD as well, so in fact, I will practice much with the DA/SA transition and initial DA pull. But, for competing with my buddy at the range, I was curious if I could keep it in that beautiful SA only operation, with the light smooth SIG SA trigger :-) My bud won't stand a chance with that glock!

Chrisman, the Sig P220 Compact you are looking at was my first 45acp. I love the beavertail and the shove of a 45acp. I bought extra mags from Top Gun Supply. P245 mags will work in it as well. As for the DA/SA: Yes, you can cock the hammer back and have 6+1 rounds of SA. You will really like that decocker too. It's a sweet feature. Oh, and those SIGLITE Night Sights. You will more than likely compare all other sights to them going forward. And just wait til you see how well you shoot it...

One last thing: the P220 Compact has a 3.9in barrel, not the 4.4in barrel that Bud's has printed there. I've heard nothing but good things about Bud's Guns but I've noticed that they type the wrong crap in their adds pretty often.

Thanks for the info. And thanks for telling me about Buds, so I compared the page displayed for the gun on Bud's and they snatched all the wrong info about this particular handgun from the sigarms sight, which in the end turned out to be a tragic ending. That version of the p220 is not legal in california even though the buds page said "Cali Legal" at the bottom.

EEEErggg! Oh well, guess I'll order the full sized p220 in two tone as soon as they get them back in stock. Do you know of any other online vendors similarly priced?

Hi Chrisman, I'd keep your eyes open for a used one. As it's a very popular and common gun, they are often up for sale used but in great condition. Furthermore, as the price of the new ones seems to be increasing due to the dollar/Euro thing, you often get quite the bargain.

I have a couple of those (220 in .45) and a couple of 226s (9mm) too. Love em.

chrisman, BillCoe's thoughts on a CPO Sig Sauer are a very good idea. Sigs are built for the long haul and a refurbished Sig is definitely a very good buy. BTW: there are still a few NIB P245's out there. They do not have the beavertail if that interests you. But, then again, neither do most of the P220's.
