Fun topic.....non-allowed autos in movies!
Yeah - I am bored tonight. I got to watching good ole' Dirty Harry the other night - the one where Callahan carried the 44 Automag and was thinking "there is no way his department would let him carry that". I got to thinking about other movies that prominently feature autos that probably would not be allowed to be carried on duty - several Arnold movies where he favors the Desert Eagle come to mind and the Coonan shows up in a couple of the police flicks with Sam Elliot (from the 80's - can not think of the names of them). Other examples?

In real life -- at one time some NYPD officers had to deal with an extremely serious threat - they then carried 'unauthorized weapons' !
The best movie director for guns is John Milius who is a real gun nut , very knowledgeble as in Dirty Harry !

good question. I know several LEO's had .44 mag revolvers in their cars back then, in case they wanted it.

The Dirty Harry AutoMag was not a "carry" weapon, he took it out after the bad guys took his "Model 29" away from him. Two pieces of trivia here. First the .44 Magnum Harry carried was actually a .41 Magnum, and there were two AutoMags used in the movie, both custom built by Lee Juras for the movie after production had ceased. Urban ledgend says the serial number series is only two weapons long!

Can think of a few from Predator 2
Desert eagle....with a scope lazer thingie? Sig wtih some sort of crazy lazer? Something sort of off topic ish @ jaughtman For what it is worth, my dads best Childhood friend was a NYPD officer. Back in the early and mid 70's on many occasions my dad would need to take his friends BHP from him at and on the way home from the bar because he was "too drunk". His friend was NOT a detective or anything at the time Not sure if this was a duty or duty weapon though. |

I can't really think of any off the top of my head that fit , but a while back I discovered a website that pretty much has it all covered.
The IMFDB (Internet Movie Firearms Data Base) is a place for gun geeks, by gun geeks. The premise is pretty much "gun spotting" in a Wikipedia-type format; Users add firearms to the data base and write up the info. Anyway, just about every gun you can name (and some you can't) that has been in a movie can be found there. I'm not sure if you can search by movie title, but it stands to reason that you can. http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Category:Gun |

I know it's not a handgun, but I love the FN FNC that Al Pacino carried in Heat.

I doubt the SFPD would let anyone carry a .44 mag to begin with.
They were one of the depts that did issue S&W Mod.58s in .41 mag though. |

Up until they adopted the G-22 about 15 years ago our County Police Dept. allowed their officers to carry anything they could qualify with. Since they had to furnish their own guns it seemed fair. I'd say about half were carrying S&W revolvers, either 66's or 686, but the other half had a wide range of guns including 29's, BHP and 1911's.
Many smaller dept's will still allow that, but almost all bigger depts issue the same gun to everyone and document all training to use in court in case of lawsuits. Some special units such as SWAT may be allowed to carry something different, but once again only with lots of extra training and documentation. |

Custom .45 from Nash Bridges, and not to mention who the heck drives a '71 'Cuda as a duty car - much less afford to repair it as much as he does on a cop's pay Musta been good to be SFPD in the mid-'90s

Agent Dana Scully and her Bernardelli Model 60 in .32 ACP
The show was set in the mid 90's - after the 1986 Miami Shootout. Most agents would have been using the Sig-Sauer P226 or P228. It's my understanding that the FBI had grandfathered the use of some Model 10s, Model 38 Bodyguard Airweights, Chief's Specials, and Model 19 Combat Magnums for some older agents but the FBI definately would not have allowed an agent to carry a 32 cal Bernardelli Model 60.
She then later carried a Manurhin PPK in .32ACP - also would not have been allowed. In season 2 she switched over to using the Sig-Sauer P228. |

That's the special alien killer gun. The aliens are kind of spindly so they didn't need bigger calibers.

Agent Mulder carrying a Taurus?
At a time when FBI agents would have been carrying Sigs, he is seen in an episode with a Taurus PT92.
He later started carrying a SIG-Sauer P226 chambered in 9mm. . |

Bruce Willis in the last two Die Hard movies (carrying a Beretta 92F and Sig P220 as an NYPD detective). The Beretta can be explained away in the first two movies since he's off duty and out of state in both.

I've always loved the stupid huge guns guys in movies have. The D'eagle is probably my favorite sine it's so huge and cumbersome, and you'd probably lose a gunfight while drawing, if not then immediately following you missing your first shot.
Not a cop, domt know what they're allowed to carry. Keep em coming! |

the Robo Cop gun is actually an Air-Soft pistol. I think the seen muzzle flash was CGI special effects. Kind of a downer

Almost every picture in this thread features the shooter with their finger on the trigger, half of which are pointed up at the sky.
Drives me crazy. |

I thought it was a modded 92fs. Fit for blank autofire (cg muzzle flash didnt start being cool till the late 90's, and early 2000's)
Movie guns till that point actually fired special high flash movie blanks, and usually used an electric action. Example, the rifles in Aliens were made out of a styled up thompson smg, with a tricked out Remington 870 as a grenade launcher. Hollywood armorers (at least used to ) work all sorts of gunsmithing magic Whatever, I always wanted one since I was a kid |
