I've been shooting shotguns forever, and I had no idea there was a special tool for the job. Most tubes and barrels say what the choke is somewhere on the surface. Be aware, however, as many as half of the chokes I have actually checked by patterning did not provide the indicated result. IOW, I've seen mod. chokes put less than half the pellets into the 30 in. circle at 40 yds. I've also seen imp. chokes put more than 60 % of the pellets in the circle. There's only one way to find out what a choke TRULY is with a given load... Throw some lead.

Yeah I agree about testing a particular choke's shot pattern, but there is a thing shaped something like a long arrowhead that tells what the choke size is by how far it goes down the muzzle. I've seen them and even seen them for sale (not often, pretty rare). I was going to try finding and buying one but can't think of what their called or where I saw them for sale.

Thanks for the help !!

Virtually any set of calipers are are capable of measuring the inside diameter of your choke. The nominal diameter of a 12-gauge barrel is .729", and this page

might help in establishing what you have.

Actually the device is called a choke gauge.

Here's one for $20 at Brownell's. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/sto...NG+CHOKE+GAUGE
