I like to check the length on higher pressure cartridges. From about .357/.44 Magnum pressures on up, the cases do seem to need trimming or the crimp doesn't always end up where I want it. On lower pressure rounds I almost never trim.

I've never had to trim any straight wall cases. I have some .454 and .460 S&W cases that have been fired six times and are still the same length. I also have some .44 mag cases that have been fired at least eight times (Starline) with the max load of H110, and always resize to original length. Try to take good care of those high pressure cases, cuz they ain't cheap.

Straight walled cases don't stretch nearly as much as bottle necked rifle cases, but you will get more uniform crimps if you trim all your cases to the same length.
