As others have said, its not important functionally for the brass to be nice and shiny. It just has to be clean.
When I was a poor student, I used to run them through with my laundry. I had some knee length socks that I would put a handful of dirty brass in and tie it off. Ran it through the washer and dryer that way.
Came out clean, but not shiny.
