Retired Officer Kills Florida Drugstore Robber

The shooter in a deadly drugstore holdup in Volusia County over the weekend was a retired cop and the graphic surveillance video was released Monday afternoon. The robber was shot trying to hold up The Medicine Shoppe, on US-1, in New Smyrna Beach.

Witnesses who heard Smith fire his gun at Higginbotham told Eyewitness News it only took the guard one shot to stop the robber.

What, no "investigation is pending, but no charges have been filed yet"?

If it were a 'normal' citizen, the press would have been all over the legal aspect. But as he was a retired LEO and security guard, everything is kosher.

But glad the employees didn't get hurt.

I find it interesting that the article stresses that the shooter, Kenneth Smith, is a retired cop instead of stressing that he was the security for the drugstore.

Nifty job. You can only see the guard's head in the first of the video and he is at the bottom of the screen (before moving into action). I would guess he did a fairly quick draw and went on the move....nicely done, and took out the bad guy with just one shot.

Moving and shooting at the same time. Good idea! Almost looks like a good COM hit with a medium to big bore pistol used by the officer. Good deal.

Nothing further.

I live in that TV market. It got a lot of play and may encourage bad guys to think twice before they commit crimes.

I wish we knew what caliber hand gun the security officer was using and had access to the autopsy report.

Even though we don't, I'm going to guess that the bullet went through the sternum and possibly hit the spine. Nice shot.
