Does your 650 spill powder when indexing?
I got this idea from another forum and thought some here would benifit from it. It’s easy loosen the set screw and remove the shell plate bolt install washers and thrust bearing and reassemble. Instead of the shell plate snapping into place it glides there, less than $5 and worth it. The bearing is NTA 815 and the washers are TRA 815.

What a great idea. Should be applicable to the Square deal and 1050, too, though I don't know if the size would be the same? Have to look. The 550B, even though hand indexed, might likewise benefit from it if you developed the right feel?
For those not familiar with the problem, the loader throws the shell plate around fast enough to develop some inertia in the powder. When the detent stops the plate abruptly in final position, the powder tends to kind slosh up the side of the case and can spill over. Three questions: How much did you have to slow the pace of your handle up-stroke to get the gliding effect? How much did you have to ease up on tightening the bolt in final assembly. And, can powder and primer residue and other dirt get into the bearing rollers or are the perimeter sealed in some way I can't see? It looked to me like some kind of dust cover might be in order?

The SD uses a shouldered bolt that bottoms out (doesn’t have a set screw like the 650) so it would require machining and a smaller ID bearing. The 1050 would require a huge bearing as tool head is mounted to the shaft that the shell plate rotates around.
I didn’t slow the down stroke, in fact after getting used to it indexing so smooth I’ve sped up. The bolt is tighter than without the bearing but not “tight”, I played with this for a minute to see what felt right. I used no seal, haven’t seen need for one yet. |
