Cruncher is absolutely right. When this happens it is devestating. It only happened to me once 37 years ago, but it still haunts me to this day.

My 870 came with a mag tube that is the same length as the 18 1/2" barrel. It holds 6+1. There is a longer extension that is used for the 21" barrels that is a 7+1.

Since you asked:

Winchester 1300, 5 rounds 00 buck in the tube, empty chamber, safety off, trigger lock.

I could see bird shot if one lives in an apartment, but you are trading stopping power for less penetration (and bird shot will penetrate drywall also). 00 buck is the way to go, generally.

No accessories, because I think slings, sights, extended mags, etc., just slow you down, negating one of the main advantages of the shotgun. One of these days, I'll get a taclight for it...I'd load slugs in the side-saddle, if I had one, but I'd rather have a rifle if it came to that.

No RedLevel42, You are not alone! I have Century Arms SxS rabbit ear in 12 guage loaded with 00 buckshot hanging in easy reach of my bed and It's there to deal with anyone that gets by the two pitbulls in the living room! That gun is great after a lot of fine tuning but considering that I got it as a gift a little work to make it smooth was worth it!

Currently it’s a Winchester 1300 Defender that’s loaded with Remington Express Ammunition 3” 00 Buckshot. I’ll try and get a pick up soon. I picked it up from a member of this board a couple weeks ago.

Remington 870 18" with Blackhawk Specops recoil reducing stock, fiber optic sights, 2 extension tube. Loaded with 2- #1 buckshot and the rest 3" magnum slugs. With 2 slugs, a #1 buck, a tactical 00, and a 3" 000 in the saddle. The ammo I need could change dramatically depending on the two or four legged varmint trying to break into the house. Many PH's, including the late Capstick, recommend that #1 buckshot is the best to use and far more effective than 00 or 000 to use for animals around leopard size. Which for me is lion and people.

Just picked up a Mossberg 930 SPX as my Christmas present from the wife. What a great wife I have. After Christmas, I'll be spending some time at the range getting to know this shotgun, as it's my first. Just wanted to have all bases covered, i.e. pistol, carbine, shotgun.

Err I cringe whenever I see high power rounds in a shotgun for home defense. A Rem 870 loaded with bird shot is sufficient, if pellets miss you don't want them flying through walls. Just the standard walmart 870 express Magnum.
I cringe when someone says they use bird shot instead of 00 buck or slugs

Winchester 1300 20 gauge that I picked up at a local pawn shop for $125.00. When I bought it, the stock had but cut short, most likely for a little kid but the butt pad hadn't been finished and there was rust spots all over the steel parts.

So I took it apart, rubbed all the metal and trigger assembly down with steel wool to clean off the rust and give it a scuff for paint. Cut the barrel down to 18&3/4s of an inch and added a sling eyelet to the magazine end cap and put an eyelet in the stock too. The paint I used was a custom blend I made of Dura-Coat. I sanded down the butt pad with a belt sander to match the stock. The final part I added was a green fiber optic bead that attaches to the barrel rib out at the business end. The good thing is too, that if I wanted to put a pistol grip on it instead of the butt stock, its still long enough to meat the 26" O/A length requirement.

I have a bag made from the bottom end of an ACU pant leg that can be closed by using the drawstring and has a shoulder strap. Its big enough to carry 50+ rounds of ammo and stays with the shot gun so if I have to move I make sure I have ammo with me. Just because I don't have a fancy sling with ammo loops for it yet. As for ammo, I just carry 2&3/4 inch bird shot because I haven't gotten any buck shot yet.

This is the bag before it got the strap attached.

This is with me about 99% of the time and gets parked in the garage when I'm home, so I guess it counts
