Hodgdon H4831
at the suggestion of the guy at the shop today I picked up a can (the 4oz test can) of Hodgdon 4831 powder. My plan was to use this in my 243 with 85gr Sierra HPBT bullets. Well the problem is I cant find any data using this powder with these bullets. Has anyone ever tried this combo? Looks like I'm gonna have to keep with my IMR 4895 in the 243 until I try something else.

From the Sierra Loading Manual*
43.1 gr - 3000 fps 44.4 gr - 3100 fps 45.7 gr - 3200 fps ** ** = MAXIMUM LOAD! * = This is from an older (second) edition manual I wouldn't use this data if you can find something more recent. |

I have used H4831 for years and had no problems with it. My best load in 243 was 48grs in RP case CCI 200br primer, Speer 75gr hollow pt ( not the TNT) 1" grps all day at 250yds. Hodgdon give 48grs as max load with 85 gr bullets.
I use 46grs behind Speer 85gr spt boattail (tight groups) Sierra give 45.7 as the top load with their 85gr bullets. Usually go with the powder manufacturers data as it is safe and tested by them per batch. The only constant with the bullet maker is the bullet, everything else, like barrel , primer, case, powder batch, etc is variable. I always start 10 to 15% lower than max and work up and Itry the main bench rest primers to get the best result like rem9 1/2, win wlr, cci 200 br, fed 210 gold match. |
