Replicate Hornady 12ga 300gr FTX slug load

Since I live in the great nearly bankrupt state of Illinois where we can only use shotguns, muzzle loader rifles, and some pistols for deer hunting I am looking to replicate the Hornady FTX slug load that my Rem. 870 Super Slug is so fond of shooting accurately (3" groups at 200 yards).

Does anyone here know where I might purchase the sabots that are needed to hold the .50 caliber 300gr FTX bullet that Hornady uses? Also, does anyone have any idea what powder Hornady uses, I've pulled apart two shells and the powder loads both measured within .1 gr of each other but I would still need to know what powder they are using. I have already made a custom crimper die that should allow me to put the identical crimp on that Hornady uses at the factory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Richard

BTW, hunting deer with a shotgun like the 870 Super Slug with it's 25 1/2" rifled barrel isn't all that bad as shots can accurately and safely be taken out to 300 yards, especially when using a Leupold S.A.B.R. scope, plus the performance of that 300gr bullet is phenomenal!

The best way to replicate the Hornady loadings is to buy them off the shelf.

Hornady uses a non canister powder to load their shells, in other words you can not buy the powder fron your local supplier.

Samething with the sabots used in the shells. And the 300 grain FTX bullet may be made just for shotgun velocities.

Ballistic Products sells the 350 xtp-hp which loads in their RSS sabot. $40 for 50 (they are out of stock now) and $17 for the sabots/50. Plus you'd need to contact them and probably buy their slug manual for loading data. Plus you'd probably have to buy their hulls as most of their data uses hulls that you have to buy from them. Ballistic Products techs can advise you on use of the FTX instead of the XTP-HP. Ballistic Products is your best bet yet you probably won't save much over buying factory.

Thanks for your reply, I managed to find this website for the sabots:

and the .50 cal. 300gr Hornady FTX bullet is the same bullet used by muzzleloaders so all I need to do is to work up a powder load.

Hold on just a second

It's not so easy. In fact it can be real dangerous. The 12 gauge shotgun is supposed to run @ 10,500 LUP. More than that will stretch the locking system, a LOT more will burst the barrel. Don't just substitute a load of the same weight payload for loading the sabots. Slugs and sabots behave like a solid, instead of the fluid nature of a shotcharge.

While you're on the BPI website, you will need; over powder gas seals, cushion/fiber wads, a slug reloading manual,(from BPI), some good NEW empty hulls, and a roll crimper. You might find those big xtp bullets cheaper on another website like midway IF they have some left.

Now, when all is said and done, AND you have some loaded, you will most likely NOT have the same accuracy. If you do, then buy a lottery ticket on the way home, your luck is at it's peak!
