Good Nipple Wrench?

I need a decent nipple wrench that will work on a Pietta 1851 and a Pietta 1858. Most of the ones I read about on Cabela's had bad reviews. Can anyone recommend a decent one that will work on both guns without stripping the nipples?

Apparently good ones can be had, but I made mine. Took the handle from the mushy (where's the Cap'n when you need him?) $8 one that I paid $15 to get overnighted to me and attached it to my self-machined 440C SS body hardened to ~ 53 Rc. Even made provisions to incorporate the nipple pick from the mushy unit.

OK... just braggin'.

I got mine from Dixie and they have not failed me yet. It is like a screwdriver, you need to get the right size.

The Doc is out now.

The Treso's use a standard slot type wrench. As far as size, depends on the revolver. Walkers and Dragoons use a large slot, 51's, 60's, 61's and 1858's use what I call a standard size, and the little 31's use a small slot. The the ROA uses a hex. I must have at least a dozen different nipple wrenches.

Okay. Hopefully, Taylor's Uberti wrench will also fit 12x28 Treso nipples.

Nipple "wenches" are what you get for your money, but sometimes inversely. I've wrung off a few. Had to give a measurement to my buddy, a machinist, to make me one from decent steel.

He did the same as Grymster, duped it, even the threads for the nipple pick.

THAT sucker will take out ANY stuck nipple without twisting off. SADLY, it does not fit the Walker nipples. Once I replace them, new now, but eventually, will fit them all.

I only had the '58 when I made that thing and have since discovered that it's a wee tight on the '63 Pocket nipples. It goes on and it works, but I should have made it just a tad bigger. Think I'll do that at some point and put a little larger chamfer on the OD of the business end.

I followed the suggestion of someone on this site and cut a groove in a 1/4 socket (7/32") to make a "nipple socket." I used a Dremel cutting wheel. It took a while but it works great. And you can put a T-handle or long ratchet handle on it to get some real torque.

Because I finger tighten my nipples with anti-seize grease, i seldom have a problem getting them out. But that socket has come in handy with some revs I bought, including a kit Rem '58 that laid in a drawer for 20 years and the Rem. Navy I just bought that was new with cones over-tightened from the factory.

A big thanks to the hombre who passed the idea on to me, I'm making a backup with a Snap-On socket I found in a pawnshop bin.

I did this last night and it worked great! I bought a 7/32" socket, used my Dremel tool to cut the socket to fit and it only took a couple minutes. Tim

A 5mm 1/4" socket is an almost perfect fit--a little narrower than 7/32". Just take your time with a Dremel cutting disk. Get as tight a fit as you can, but keep in mind the lug on the nipple varies. Ampcos are a bit to the wide side.

With a new gun the best course is prevention. Remove the nipples and reinstall them with anti-seize compound or grease. That way you don't have such a struggle removing them for cleaning.

For old, stuck nipples, use a cylindrical nipple wrench without the handle and a drill press. No power, just turn the chuck, rocking it until the nipple gives.
