Recommendations please: Beefy 9mm

I have a Glock 19. When I bought it I was looking for a light weight compact gun for Concealed Carry. Now I live in a state where no concealed carry is allowed. Now I want to look for a replacement in about the same value since it will be a trade probably.

What would have the following characteristics:
Heavier than the G19
4 inch or a little longer
More metal and less synthetic material or just heavier metal
More "substantial" feel
Longer grips/butt for extra extra large hands.
Popular enough that after market grips can be easily found

So far I have only found the Beretta 92 or the Taurus equivalent.
Any others??

Thanks to all who reply.

You should try the CZ 75 one of the best steel 9mm pistols available.

I am guessing you still want a 9mm.
1. 1911 - STI Spartan, RIA Tactical, etc.
2. EAA Witness Elite Match.
3. Beretta 92 - like the military uses. -- big but not as heavy as the first 2.
4. Stoeger Cougar.
5. Double stack 1911 9mm - RIA maybe the lowest priced.
Maybe - magnum research baby eagle - have not tried this one.

A lot of good options have been given already. Another one would be a SIG P226.

CZ75

+1 on the CZ75B (manual safety) or CZ75BD (decocker). I have the BD model and have experienced no issues after 1,500 rounds. Its all steel and has been proven to last. The CZ75 SP-01 is real nice as well, although it probably wouldn't be an even trade for the Glock....might cost you a bit out of pocket. Sig226 is nice as well, although that won't be an even trade either. I only speak about what I have shot/owned, I know there are many other "beefier" guns chambered in 9mm than the Glock that are around the same price. Ruger makes a few as well I believe.

Check out any of the 3rd generation Smith & Wessons. I see lots of them advertised used, and they are reliable hunks of American metal.

HK P30L, more expensive but better build quality. Look used.

If by beefy you mean long barrel liker the Beretta 92 than for the same money you can get the Glock 34 with a 5.25 inch barrell it is one of the best pistols ever. But don't take my word for it see what the History Channel says. Wait for it after the Benelli M4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y780LwbwFIM

There are two of them in there

The Sig P226 or P229 are my favorites, but an honorable mention is the Ruger P89. The P89 is one tough pistol...ugly as mud fence, but reliable and built tough.

The Beretta 92 is a superb sidearm as is the HK P30.

What kind of "Beefy" are you looking for? Heavier? Longer barrel? Wider grip frame? Or are you just looking for a typical full size pistol in contrast to the compact glock? 1911 styles will be heavier but have a narrow grip. The CZ and Sig are still heavy being steel and alloy respectively, but are wider due to the double stack magazine. The Beretta is the widest here despite having a similar capacity as most double stacks but is great if you have long fingers/larger hands.

I appreciate the great feedback. I can respond more when I am off work. The beefy I am thinking of is heavier, longer and thicker grips, more metal, and a barrel between 4 - 5 inches. Two reasons: 1) I have very big hands and prefer a fistful of a gun and 2) want such little recoil that my wife will like it too. She has a hard time not flinching with the G19.

The issue with these pistols is that the OP wants easily replaceable grips. Only a handful (no pun intended...) of aftermarket grips exist for 3rd-gen Smiths because the wraparound grip unit is complex in shape and it retains the mainspring. IOW a 3rd-gen grip unit has to be properly engineered for the pistol to function; it's not just a couple of slabs of decorative wood.

The 1st- and 2nd-gen Smith pistols use traditional screw-on grip panels, but these pistols are old enough that finding the right one may be a challenge, aftermarket support isn't great, and there are some other drawbacks compared to the other pistols listed- e.g. the front sights aren't readily replaceable, the rear sights aren't very modern, the pistols use an "old school" separate barrel bushing, and many lack a RH-side ambidextrous decocker/safety lever.

Beefy you say? What about an EAA Witness (metal frame not poly). You can get an elite match for under $600

even though I hate recommending glocks...

might I suggest the glock 17? pretty much the same gun as the 19 but longer grips and slightly longer barrel and slide.

I am partial to the springfield XDM myself with all the strong points of the glock with none of the weaknesses(for my uses).

if you are just looking for flat out intimidation I would agree with 3rd gen S&W, EEA witness or early Ruger P series, handled the P89 at a gun show 2 days ago and was actually pretty impressed.

Not looking for intimidation but I just prefer big pistols to fill my hand. The heaviness I think will help to reduce recoil so my wife will enjoy shooting it.

In that case I would suggest a simple XD9 service. I have big hands and mine feels very good, the grip is about the same size as my 1911 commander. I have nearly 10,000 rounds through mine and can't remember the last time it malfunctioned. It's still my favorite gun to shoot. Recoil is very manageable despite the lightweight polymer frame.

+1 for Sig 226 or slightly shorter Sig 229

Same weapons with slightly different barrel lengths, that appears to meet your criteria.

The S&W M&P 9mm may also be worth looking at.
