7.62x39 Brass Help...

I am looking to reload my own 7.62x39 ammo.. The issue I am having is finding the brass for sale to reload. The ones I do find cost more than the loaded ammo itself. Clearly, I am looking in the wrong places and am no longer gonna waste more time doing so. I figured I would resort to this forum and see what you guys can do to help out with this.

Thank You.

You may need to buy some Prvi at $9/box and save the cases. It seems that this is one round, like 9mm, that it is not economical to reload. I reload range scavaged brass.

There are some cartridges that are simply cheaper to buy than they are to reload. For 60% of what I do with this cartridge, FMJ is fine and I can get Tula for five bucks a box. The other 40% of my uses are handled splendidly by Barnaul 125 grain SP at eight bucks locally. Wolf 154 grain SP was a favorite of mine but appears to have been discontinued, according to Midway. I see Herters is now making the 154, hopefully it's the same load.

Thats exactly why I want to reload this ammo.. because certain batches shoot well and then when they get discontinued, youre stuck trying to find something similar again. Plus I wanna tweak it a bit and make better ammo and stock up of course!

Neither Wolf or Herters actually mfg. ammo, your 154 gr. ammo will be from the same mfg. in Russian no matte who's name is on the box. Wolf is just an importer that contracts out it's ammo to various countries, there owned by SSI a corporation in the United States. Some of the ammo mainly steel case berdan primed cartridges are made in Russian mainly by Tula,Prvi Partizan of Serbia makes the brass case centerfire cartridges and the German Co. SK make the match 22 rf. ammo.

Herters on the other hand is now owned by a Indonesian company that bought the rights to the Herters name,Cabala's carries Herters name brand products. You may find about anyones ammo in a Herters box they just repackage others mfg. ammo.

Herters was a Wisconsin base sporting goods company started by George Leonard Herter. Cabala's and Bass Pro Shop or just two of the big box sporting stores that modeled there business after the original Herters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Leonard_Herter

Knowing your ammo an who makes it may save you a couple bucks if you have a choice between two brands. why pay extra for a name when you get the same thing in both boxes.

Last time I bought 7.62x39 ammo was from AIM and it was $4.15 a box I think for Wolf Military Classic. I can't load it that cheap so I bought 400 rounds of it and don't even think about reloading for the SKS. To be honest I don't think you're going to find 7.62x39 brass for less than $.40 a piece, I doubt there's enough demand for it to justify a lower price.

True or likely so. I should have said 'marketing' instead of 'making'.

Well you could do what I did, lurk around a lot of forums watching for brass for sale. Over the past year or so I've acquired almost 1500 pieces of mostly new 7.62 x 39 brass, and never paid more than 25 cents a round for it. A couple of years ago I also bought some for about 30 cents a round until I got smart and started waiting for it to pop up on forums.

I wanted to have a stash of good, accurate, dependable, non-corrosive ammo that I could use for.........well, anything, if you catch my drift. This is the way to do it.

DASHZNT, This may be your lucky day. I'd have to count the but close to 500 new IMI 7.62x39 cases and maybe 300 new K&P made by laupa 7.62x39 brass.

If your interested PM and I'll get accurate count on brass and I've had this brass over 10/12 years and if I price it for what I paid for it back then you get good deal plus shipping.

One of my early wildcat project was the 308 case shorten to 1 1/2" then I did the 30x44 and 30x47 those last two were for the HBR matches. I've also take the 7.62x39 and formed 6ppc/22ppc case. I also build couple rifles bolt action rifles chamber for the 7.62x39 in 30cal with 1/15 thru 1/18 twist barrels for some of the 112/118gr bullets.

If you decide to buy this brass I'll send you a sample of the IMI and K&P brass before you send payment and you'll see this is good brass if you don't like it keep the brass.

Even if I could find 7.62x39 brass and it was economically feasible to reload (FMJ bullets alone are close to the price of new steel-cased ammo), my AK throws it so far forward and to the right that it would be hard to get it all back. Something to think about if you shoot at a public range.

Your dilema is exactly why I passed on buying an SKS or AK, and fell in love with 5.56/223.

A simple mosquito net over a PVC frame will knock down your brass in the AK some shooting ranges even have those installed between the stalls. In the SKS it very easy to modify the gas tube drilling two to three small hole of the proper dia. and in a specific position just below where the nipple fits into the gas tube.

This vent off excess gas pressure which effect bolt speed and ejection patterns basically dumping the brass right at your feet,it doesn't effect velocity or accuracy the mod should be done on a spare tube.

Sounds good, as long as it doesn't affect reliability. I'd be open to any guidance as to how to do this for my AK (using a spare gas tube of course).

Well.. I shoot on private farm land so im nkt worried about losing the brass at a local range. And I too own 5 Ar15s and reload .223/5.56 NATO. Currently I have 7000 rounds and counting, I just want to have tons more of 7.62x39 on hand to have fun with and in case I ever need it for a rainy day.

Never tried the mod on a AK but you can probably regulate the bolt speed and ejection pattern buy using cast bullets and a powder like 4895. Thats basically what I do with my Chinese SKS it cycles with a very low pressure curve only requiring 12.5 grs. of Alliant 2400 and a 170 gr. Lee gas check cast bullet drops the brass right at my feet,MV runs about 1450 fps. on the chrono.

Here is the thread http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=41391.0 If you PM Mr. Gibson he will probably provide you with some photos of the mods.

Dang, missed that, always looking for more 7.62x39mm brass. I also cast for this caliber, does well in my CZ 527M.
Have fun loading for it, easy caliber to load and fun to shoot!
