Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine

For my birthday my dad got me a Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine. picked it up today, little dirty, not the best condition but still cool. Made by ROF Fazakerley. Serial number in the thousands, chambered in .303 (I say that becouse some were converted to 7.62 NATO) any stories, info, or comments you want to leave/share feel free. I will upload pic later

No No5 LE was converted to 7.62 by MOD, possible by after market sellers.

Many No4's were made to look like the No5. Look for the lightening cuts on the receiver and Knox form.

So-called ".308 Jungle Carbine conversions" were Ishapore 2A rifles that were modified by retailers in the U.S. to resemble No. 5 rifles.

Waiting for pic's to add to my No5 data base. Be sure and have a pic of the end of the fore-end. Some have caps, some don't.

There was a program to convert No. 4 rifles to 7.62 NATO, with the new designations being L8A1 through L8A5, depending on which model No. 4 it was. There was also an unrelated No. 8 rifle in .22 rimfire. The 7.62 Lee-Enfield sniper rifles were L42s. But otherwise, I don't think the conversion program really got off the ground and did not include the No. 5, which continued in use just the same in the Far East until replaced with the SLR. The No. 5 may have been a failure as far as the original intentions were concerned but they used them until the end of the bolt action era anyway.

That looks like a nice legit No5 carbine. Tikirocker has a list going on surplusrifleforum.com. Make sure you check that out and update it with yours. Congrats!

The receiver cuts are a No5 rifle, looks like a nice one.

Get a no-go gauge and check the headspace before you shoot it. They are cheap, just make sure you get a mil-spec gauge and not a commercial gauge. It looks like a coin with a slot for the extractor cut in it. No. 5's are one of my favorite milsurp rifles ever made! I hunted whitetail deer with one last year.

Gyvel is correct on the Ishapore 2A. The attached is mine. The gun is in very good condition and passed head spacing with flying colors. The one other difference with the Ishapore is that they were made with better quality steel to handle the higher pressure of the 7.62 Nato. The Ishapores were built as 7.62.
