Clays in 9mm
Are any of you using this combination? I just ran out of 231 and have some Clays that I bought for a reason I cannot remember. I see loads listed on Hodgdens website. I mostly shoot a P7M8 with 124 gr. JHP's from Remington but I also have some 115gr Rainiers.

Buddy of mine uses Universal Clays in 9mm and says it's the most accurate load he's found yet for that caliber.

Universal is a great powder for 9mm. I use it in combo with 115 gr and 124 gr XTP's.

Which Clays
Hodaka,
Do you have regular Clays, or UNIVERSAL Clays? Makes a big difference. Regular Clays is very fast burning. Universal Clays is much slower. Don't confuse your data. If you load Universal Clays to a regular Clays charge weight you'll get an underpowered load. If you load regular Clays to a Universal Clays charge weight, you'll get shrapnel. All the Best, D. I did Hodaka...
Yes, I did recently. 3.1gr Clays *Not* Universal, but "Clays" under a Meister 115 LRN bullet. Fifty shots later I was pleased, as it was my first 50 (finally) assembled.
Deprime/resize 2000+ 9mm cases on a single stage press, and life steps in between times... LOL Do you reload shotshells? Clays is good for that too I understand... (trying to help jog memory of why ya bought it) Price? |

I recently loaded up 500 9mm with Universal Clays. I really liked the combination. Accuracy was great, the recoil was negligible. Overall, I think it's my favorite 9mm load.
115gr LRN (moly coated) 4.5gr H Universal Clays Win/Federal Primers Great load for 9's. |

Clays
Why did they make the names so confusing? Universal Unique, not. Universal Titegroup, not. The stuff I have is Clays. I'm going to use 3.2 grains and I'll let you know how it works. I remember buying it because someone said it was very clean burning and I was tired of cleaning up after Unique and 231.

Universal Clays is pretty nice in the 9mm with 124-125 gr bullets..
regular clays is pretty good..but you really got to watch it..it gets to high pressure pretty fast..look for sign on the primer as you building your loads.. |

Hodgdon minimum under a 115 LRN is 3.0gr, and max is 3.4gr. My book (Hodgdon "Magazine" 2006 Annual) doesn't show 124gr but does 125gr. FMJ. I went with 3.1 to keep low on pressure.

any of you fellas have an idea how these loads (and maybe hotter loadings) with this 'clays' powder will perform in a carbine-length barrel? I've loaded Bullseye (not the best likely) and PowerPistol (good AFAIK) and open to opinions based (hopefully) on experience. I loaded some 452(Win. no longer makes) loads for my .45 carbine with great results, clean burning and seems hard-hitting. I don't own a chrono so I can't study velocitys, but have read enough to figure that a slower-burn rate powder may be better for a carbine barrel chambered for straight-wall pistol round.
