I'm looking for a holster for a 5 1/2" bbl blackhawk. I'd like something that was a little higher ride with the grip frame above the belt, instead of a loop the belt fits through would prefer slots or method that would hold the holster closer to body, definitely want leather, and would prefer a holster that was boned to fit the handgun. No special uses, plinking, carrying while varmint hunting with rifles and possibly javelina hunting in Arizona. Any ideas?

I'm right-handed; I carry a pistol on my right side, and tend to sling my rifle on my right shoulder. I can tell you that a high-ride holster and a slung rifle is a miserable situation...

I've taken to carrying a pistol in a right-side holster, but just in front of my left hip...

FWIW, Art

Art: I appreciate what you're saying, but I don't hunt big game any longer. Used to go with a cross draw, much like what you're descibing. The handgun is all I'll be carrying, kind of a walk-a-bout set up for plinking. May use the handgun for javelina, but this will be someplace between rarely and never. Thanks for your input......Bogger

Bogger,
It sounds as if something along the lines of Kramer's "vertical" scabbard or Derry Gallagher's "Jeffee" would be what you're looking for. You might check to see if the guys at Milt Sparks could build you a #55BN for it. These are all straight-drop holsters (although you can specify a different cant) with a supplemental belt slot on the trailing edge of the holster, to hold the butt in close.

This is what my dad is wearing. It is designed to ride about splean high on the left side. When you sit down with this holster the curve of the bottom of the holster sits on the thigh and takes the weight off (my dad rides a four wheeler). It was designed by Scott Evans.

I had a similar sitation a while back.
While at Mitch Rosen's shop in NH, I
inquired about a holster for my 4" Super
BlackHawk. He mentioned that his "Sport"
holster would be made for the gun. I
placed my order. 6 months later (I was
getting two other holsters, two mag
carriers and two belts also) it arrived.
The workmanship and fit were
extraordinary. The holster holds the gun
tighly yet stil allows for a easy draw.
It also holds the gun snugly against me
and is quite comfortable to wear with any
of my Ruger single actions.
Mitch'sproducts may cost a bit more than
others, but I couldn;'t reccommed them
enough. Each of my handguns ride in one
of his holsters as will any future ones.
See his work on-line at: <html> http://www.mitchrosen.com/ </html>

BlkHawk73: Appreciate the input. I've had a chance now to take a look at the Rosen as well as the holsters some of the other posters have suggested. I want to shoot some more 300 grainers at 1200-1300fps to see if I need a taller front sight that will need to be incorporated into the holster, but now I've got a direction, got to make a decision...got to make a decision...got to make a decision.....Bogger
