Bullet .300wm

I am looking for some bullets to reload my .300WM with. I have been using factory 180's but I want to start reloading that caliber as well. The only thing I can find local is the 165g. How much of a difference will this make on muzzle energy? What is your preference for the ideal bullet in the .300's?

Order off the net, it's cheaper and you can get what you want.

On the net I'd have to pay shipping where as my dealer I don't. Plus getting my supplies from him is cheaper than the internet. He just doesn't keep the 180's stocked. It's just 150's, and 165's, for the bullet style I want. So that's why I was asking the difference between the two.

I found my best loads are with the Nosler 200 grain Partition and the Speer 200 grain Hot Core bullets. Nosler also makes a 220 grain Partition in a Semi Spitzer configuration that is real nice. On the lighter side I like the Nosler 180 grain solid base boat tail.

Yes, the heavy bullets have higher recoil but they are what I prefer with this cartridge.

I've had great accuracy and hunting success with the 180 gr. Nosler BT loaded in the 300 WM (83 grs of Reloader 25).

I'm still playing with a 165 gr. Spitzer B.T. from Sierra. 77.8 gr. of reloader 22 and cci mag lg rifle primer. Just over .75" at 100 yds. I think it will do better but not much time to play anymore. T/C encore w/26" bull barrel.

Several years back, Elder Son got his .300 WinMag and we set out to find a super elk load. After trying several different bullets and doing a LOT of research, he settled on the Sierra 180 gr. Game King. Sorry I don't recall what the powder charge was - - I don't have the records here. It was one of the Reloder powders - - I think it was RL22, because I ended up with an RL19 load for my .338 WinMag.

The 180 GK is not only a great hunting bullet, but is extremely accurate at long range. In fact, a 1000 yard record was set with this bullet, and it stood for several years.

You don't say your intended use for your loading efforts. The tech staff at Sierra were very helpful in our load development. Their toll free Hellp Line is 800-223-8799. If you're going for elk, moose or other larger animals, where you may have to take shots from very short out to very long range, you might do well to go for the 180 gr bullet. The 165 gr. bullet is an excellent all-around wieght, but, driven at true magnum velocities, it might be a touch delicate for close-up shots.

I told the Sierra tech I was thinking of trying son's 180 GKs in my .30'06. He suggested that, at '06 vekocities, I'd be better off with the 165 GK, as beyond 200 yards, there might not be enough remaining velocity for good expansion with the 180 in the '06.

I really believe it would be worth your time and effort to secure a box of the 180 GK for testing.

I personally think that the 180gr bullets are the perfect all around ideal bullet weight for the 300WinMag, but, 76.5gr. of Reloader 19 and either Sierra Gameking 165gr HPBTs or 165gr Nosler BTs are very hard to beat for the LONG range Whitetail rifle, and I have seen that load produce incredible accuracy in several 300s that shot nothing else very well in barrel lengths from 22-26 inches. For Elk and the like I prefer 180gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. They are very impressive and usually shoot much better than Nosler Partitions.

Mr Guest is correct! 165 gr at Mag. Vel. @ close range tends to be a bit "unstable". Hit him in the throat at about 20 yards. Nice entry, just bigger than a silver dollar exit, and that's only going through maybe 3 inches of meat! He was bone dry upon post mortum inspection.

Tried to post a pic., but it didn't work. More experimentation is needed! Oh yeah, it is a desert mulie.
