Seeking Advice on 9mm Luger and .40 SW powder

Propellant suggestion

"unique" is an old reliable propellant which will work with either cartridge you desire to reload.

I use Bullseye for 9mm (and I load 'em hot.) Green Dot is a little more economical but tops out at lower muzzle velocities and it doesn't measure as well.

For top performance, WSF or Power Pistol or AA#7. (but #7 uses a lot of powder)

I load a lot of 9mm and these days, I do it with Hodgdon Universal.
In .40 S&W, I like to use Alliant Power Pistol.

I use HP-38/W231 for 9mm Luger, 40 S&W, & .45 ACP. Meters well and is very economical.

Bullseye, Unique & AA#5 work well for me in both calibers.
I've used HS-6 for hot 9 mm loads, I would guess that it would do really well in 40 as well.

I have found Universal Clays the best for my 9MM. It would be fine for the .40. Its burning rate is close to Unique, but burns cleaner in my experience.

Best,
Jerry

9 mm reloads

I have loaded a ton of 115 gr with unique and I don't know if I can find a more accurate load for my P-89 Ruger. It just seems to like them best.A word of caution though its a bit dirty.

I load 9 mm with Titegroup. About 4.0 grains to 4.2 grains. It has worked well with 124 grain plated bullets well in various pistols, and carbines.

I have also had good results with Bulls Eye powder.

There are a lot of powders that will do well for both. I do not go for big velocity numbers so I use the two powders listed above.

Power Pistol by Alliant. Excellent powder for Many common handgun loads. I use it for 9mm,40,45acp,44mag. Been useing it for years with great results. Some guys will use Bullseye for one Cal. and Unique for another. Power Pistol can be used for all those. Therefore saving you money and the potential of mixing up the wrong loads. I shoot competitive with Power Pistol and have even Won a couple Pistols with my handloads! Give it a try, you wont be disappointed. Pick up a Hornady Load book, it refers to Power Pistol a lot. Some of the other books dont. I think because Power Pistol is a little newer powder than the others. Good Luck ! ( Also it meters thru your powder dispencer well). Keep that in mind when choosing a powder.

Have tried Red Dot, HS-6 and Titegroup in the 40. All had good results. Titegroup gave excellent results. I use 3.5 grains behind my 180 grain lead and 4.2 grains behind my plated bullets for the 40 and can shoot a ragged hole at 25 feet with a rest and the recoil is light.

I am going to work on HS-6 with the 124 grain 9mm load next. Currently using TG for 115 and 124 grain bullets with good success. TG works well for me in many calibers.

Ditto on the Universal. I use in my 9mm, .40 S&W and every other non-magnum pistol caliber I handload.

Tried Unique once and found it much too dirty.

1st choice - Power Pistol
2nd Choice - Unique

PP has a lot of muzzle flash but meters more consistently than uniqe IME.

You would love WSF. It's right in between the two, and it meters like 231.
