barrel twist

Does anyone know the rate of twist of a 24" Marlin .444S purchased approximately 30 years ago?

Or you can measure it yourself.
Just do a web search for "measuring rifle barrel twist" and choose from any number of web sites that explain how.

Measuring twist rate is easy, as long as it is not longer than the barrel, which seems to be the case here at 1 in 38". You would have to measure half a turn and double it. One in 38 is up there with black powder rifles. You're limited to short/fat bullets.

Sounds like you have the micro-grove barrel. I use any where from 200grain jacketed up to 300 grain hard cast in my rifle that is similar to yours. Accuracy seems good with all bullets but point of impact can vary greatly. I mostly use 240 grain hard cast for plinking and use Hornady's 265 grain round nose for hunting. With the hunting load deer are slammed down in their tracks and never get up.
