Griswold

I've always said the only brass frame revolver I would want is a Griswold & Gunnison. Well thanks to a member on another forum I now have a brand new one. It still had the packing grease on it when I took these.

It does make smoke tho. 15 grains of Swiss 2F because that's what I had in the flask with a .380 round ball topped with a dab of bore butter.

It's pretty accurate at 20 steps offhand. That's 12 shots, black spot is two inches wide.

Love the GG-44s.

Almost as nice as the SB-36s.

Note that Hawg's is a .36 which is authentic.

I have friends named Grier from S.E. Alabama/S.W. Georgia.
I am trying to get them interested in a family tree because at one time these were known as Griswold and Grier revolvers. Mr Grier was Mr Griswold's son-in-law and was the company lawyer. I know Mr Gunnison was the mechanic and his name belongs on the gun.

Old refrigerator, just doesn't have enough holes in it to haul off yet.

Yep. I wouldn't want it if it was a .44.

Nice shooting Hawg! Wow you with a brasser, but it is a Griswold & Gunnison.

And a .36 so it meets both standards for me to own a brass frame.

Awesome looking Piece Hawg!! One of these days I'll have one. Does it shoot to POA or were you compensating? My 62 Sheriff (or that's what they call it) shoots a good 6 inches high. Groups em all there though.

POA with a six o'clock hold. My navy does the same with 25 grain loads.

Is Pietta finally getting away from the flared grips or Pietta tail? Or is it just the G&G's? Anybody bought a new navy lately?

One of the finest shooting sixguns of all time! It's a family favorite at my house.

The newest ones have been retooled compared to our older one from the last decade, they have thinner barrels. Some like the new ones, I like the older one, they both shoot awesome. Natural pointers and surprisingly, shoot point of aim at 25 feet.

All of our Pietta .36 caliber sixguns have .369 chambers with .367 grooves, though the newest Griswold has not been checked yet.

Love the round dragoon barrel, and would like to add a Leech & Rigdon someday to our stable for small game shooting with Kaido Conicals.

Hawg and Swathdiver, what diameter balls do ya'll use in in your Pietta 36's. I'm currently casting and shooting .375's just wondering if a .380 would shoot better.

I run .380s in all my .36 cal C&Bs. I've had .375s literally fall out of the chamber on a couple Ubertis that I own.

Since the chambers in all of our Pietta .36s are .369, .375s are plenty and easier on the loading levers.

Our ASM however, has .374 chambers and gets the .380s, as do any Uberti or original Colts.

I can swap the barrel and cylinder from my G&G to my 51 navy and have a L&R or I can put the navy barrel on the G&G and have a S&G.

And you can add a brass squareback TG to the mix and create my fantasy favorite (among others):

An 1851 2nd Model Dragoon .36 cal.

That will happen in a week or so.

Since there is much documentation that a half octagon/half round barrel found its way onto a few 1850's/1860's era 1849 .31 cal Pocket Pistol, I am wondering why such a barrel configuration has not shown up (to my knowledge) for an 1851 Navy. Swayze does not mention one in his " '51 Navies" treatise.

Does anyone have any info/pics about such an original Colt possibility, with either small/large round or squareback TG?

Jim

Grin. Please don't take the following as an assault or an insult.

If you don't do fantasy pieces, why do you dwell on replicas that aren't spec original Colt pistols? I'll wager that it is the best you can do with the money at hand. Originals are rare, big-buck items, usually in poor condition, and you probably would not shoot one without harming it or it coming apart in your hand. The repros are new/fairly new, pretty, and function well, and shootable.
I am in the same financial arena. To wit:

You are collecting Italian copies, with Italian proof marks, with improperly shaped backstraps/trigger guards, with Italian date codes, with various screws that enter from the wrong side, with screws that have dissimilar threads from the originals, with European wood vs. American walnut, with improper case colors (and lack of case-hardening), et al.

How is that not a fantasy pistol? I guess it depends on your definitions and where you draw the line.

To each, his/her own.

I know you like where your direction is, and I mine.

Regards,

Jim

At least mine are close copies of guns that actually existed. It's the ones that never existed that I abhor. I have/had original guns that I have/do shoot.
