Downloading the 300 Win Mag

Just picked up a TC Pro Hunter in 300 Win Mag. I was really after the frame but since my other Contender barrels do not fit the Encore line and the barrel was relatively inexpensive I decided to pick it up too. I would like to load rounds that are closer to 308 Winchester rather than getting beat up by the 300. Has any one tried this with any success?

Thanks!

I asked QL to run the powders/fill ratios/pressures/velocity combinations and was surprised to see this option for a light load.....

Cartridge : .300 Win. Mag.(@)
Bullet : .308, 168, Sierra HPBT MatchK 2200
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch or 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch or 558.8 mm
Powder : Accurate 3100 (from 69.22gr to 71.4gr)

% Powder
Fill ..Wt ..Vel ..Engy Press %Brnt
96 69.22 2626 2573 40408 96.3
96 69.72 2647 2613 41314 96.6
97 70.22 2667 2653 42242 96.9
98 70.72 2687 2694 43191 97.2
98 71.22 2708 2735 44162 97.4
00 71.40 2756 2833 46544 98.0

No other listed powders fill the case as well or operate at such low pressures.
In fact you could theoretically drop it down to a 65.1gr (90% fill) for 33,680psi/2,459fps in that 22" barrel. (Add about 35fps for every inch over 22")

COMPARE with Sierra's 5th Edition showing AA3100 going from 69.3gr(2800fps in a 26" barrel) to 76.9gr(3200fps). That last is a compressed load 1/10 of an inch into the (extruded) powder.

Handloader #258 has an excellent article on Reduced Recoil Loads. They don't specifically list the 300WM, but the Short Mag. If you've got any loading manuals, 4895, 4064, Varget, and RL-15 are the powders to try that will give 2750fs loads.

Get you a can of Trail boss, load the case to the base of the bullet, then use 75% of that amount.

Makes a dern pleasant round, and eliminates all the empty space in the case.

Buy a .308 or 30-06 barrel & sell the 300, mleeber.
