AR Bi Pod attachment - Suggestions.

A few years back I built a long range AR using a Yankee Hill 20in Fluted stainless bull barrel with a smooth free float fore guard.
The gas block in under the fore guard so there is no rail to mount a bi pod too.
Being a bull barrel I can’t find a clamp on style bi pod to fit the barrel and secondly I do not want to clamp a bi pod to the barrel.
So my question is what is my best option to mount a bi pod to a smooth fore guard?

I'm using an Impact Weapons Sling Stud to attach a Harris Bipod. Very simple design.

Gearhead: Did you have to drill the mount and the fore guard both or just the fore guard?

Drill the fore-end, attach one of these, then use any bipod that attaches to the sling stud (ie Caldwell, Harris, UTG).

That's what I was thinking but before I started drilling holes I wanted to be sure.
When I built this rifle I figured I would always have some sort of rest handy. Well that's not always the case and the rifle is extremely barrel heavy.
Great shooting gun I just need a bi pod to make is more situation friendly.

My MI Handguard had holes along the bottom already. If yours doesn't, then I'd use a sping punch, pilot drill, and then drill to size. I like that doesn't have any threads that can loosen over time.

No holes in the fore guard but that's not an issue.
I'm an ex machinist so drilling the holes is not a problem.
I just don't want to drill any unnecessary holes.

I hear you there. Noveske makes a nice one as well.

I think the ATI Swivel Stud Kit is good option.

My fore guard is round with slots so a simple hole with a nutted stud is probably my best option.
I found these and think they may work better just because the stud is a bit longer.

For the price I may order both and see which one works best.

What's the wall thickness on your handguard? Those Uncle Mike's screws may be too long in that un-threaded shoulder to get them secure.

I bought and used something like this before..... grinding / belt sanding as needed.

I has more "heft" to help spread out the force on the handguard.... BTW, the Harris Bipod one I linked to has a slight radius.

http://www.harrisbipods.com/HB2R.html

Be advised... the only real draw back was trying to mount close to the gas block.... it was really close to the gas block, and I didn't want ANY contact from barrel whip.

And No offense intended, Gearhead Eng.... but mine like the one you linked to ... lost the clip promptly.... It was no where near as full a circle as the one pictured. So if anyone wants my spare.....Lol

I want to thank everyone for the input.

Had planned to clean this rifle up last night and pull the handguard off but life came up so I will try again tonight.

9x19 I will measure the thickness tonight.

bfoosh006 the gas block may be an issue but with such a long barrel I may be able to mount behind the gas block.

Do you already have a bipod? Atlas is the gold standard.

I used a harris stud kit that had a threaded stud, and a threaded bushing set in a 1.5" x .5" washer, with an overall thin size. I cut and filed the threaded swivel stud to length. Filed down the threaded bushing and washer to fit the round forend to allow .125" clearance from the barrel. I wound up with a bipod mount as far forward as possible, keeping the bipod base fully fitted against the forend, with a free floated barrel. It does not look bubbaish.
Drill a hole as needed in the forend.

Use blue (243) or red (263) loctite on the nut.

The blue is removable, but shouldn't loosen up on its own. Red is "permanent" but can be removed with the application of heat.

I fought and fought the swivel stud nut on my .458 SOCOM's free float tube last year, after it loosened up on day two or three of the Elk hunt.
In that case, I was actually using it for a sling; but it loosened up several months later, when removing a bipod.

That nut was tight, with green loctite (290) applied, to keep it from sliding in the slot in the tube. ...And it still came loose both times.

I ended up going to a different free float tube on that rifle, so I never did apply a better loctite formula (the green is "wicking" for application after installation).
Now the bipod option uses a removable 3" rail, and the sling swivel is QD style.

Well I bought the ATI Swivel Stud Kit and the Harris Bipod #2 Hollow Forend Adptr. They both ship from the same vendor so no extra shipping and once I have then in hand I can decide which is the best option.
I also bought a Vokul 6" to 9" Hunting Rifle Bipod. I have a couple of buddies that have these and like them as much as a Harris bipod. The bipod was from the same vendor as well.

Once everything shows up and I get it mounted I will report back with pictures.

Once again thanks for all the input.

Finally had a chance to sit down and work on this rifle.
My free float forend has slots in it.
I re-clocked the delta nut so the slot in the forend would line up on the bottom of the barrel and used the Harris Bipod #2 Hollow Forend Adptor.
Tightened it down good in the slot and put the bi-pod on.
Going out this Sunday and give it a good workout.
Have to zero the optics back in now.
I'll get some pic's posted of the rifle and a review of the day next week.
