First pistol.... S&W 6906?
Well, I'm turning 21 at the end of this month and after looking at lots and lots of handguns I've come to the conclusion that I'd like a S&W 6906. Reasons for this are:
Compact(kinda) 9mm(I like the round + already reload for it) Stainless steel(more weather resistant) fits my budget($300-$400 MAX) Well, I like how they look too! lol I've been searching gunbroker and all over for one but can't seem to find them. Any suggestions guys? Anyone have one? Comments? Complaints? Any other pistol that fits this criteria that you could recommend. I know it's a broad question but I'm open to all opinions and suggestions! Thanks!!! |

Excellent choice.
I have a 5906 and a 4046 and they are both outstanding handguns. I don't think you can go wrong with a 3rd generation Smith. |

I have done business with J&G, and have found them to be good people to deal with.

Thanks for the responses so far guys! The reason I wanted the 6906 was it was the compact version of the 5906. I have small hands so the 69 seems to fit them better

I know the ones that I have arent the same as the model you had mentioned... but I DO have three S&W autos and have nothing at all bad to say about them.

After researching for the last two years(no joke) I think it's the best bang for my buck. I talked a buddy of mine to getting a Springfield XD9 full size. I've shot over 600 rounds through it and it's a great gun...just not for me. I like the look of stainless better, seems to be more resistant to the elements also.

Just saw that but $475 is a tad over my price range right now. It'd be $500 after my FFL fee. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I love mine. Although I don't shoot it as often as I'd like. You can get 5906 mags for them. Add the little adaptor to the bottom and it looks like they're made for them. Plus it give you extra capacity. Standard mag shown in the picture.

I have a 6906 with the 5906 sleeves. They work great and actually feel better than the 6906 mags.

I am a huge fan of the 3rd gen SW auto's., especially in TSW flavor.
I actaully just bought a BNIB 5906 TSW. Always on the lookout for a 3906(single stack version of the 5906). Kevin |

I really thought about these autos when I was looking for a carry pistol a few years back. Since then, I've fallen in love with them. I've only gotten a chance to handle one once, but it fit my hand like a friggin' glove. I decided on a Glock to carry because it was a little lighter, but I would describe the Smith's weight as "good weight" that would aid in accuracy and handling.
The reason you can't find them is that Smith and Wesson doesn't make them anymore. They shut down production after everyone went to the sleek, "safety-less" autos for carry. They've since revived the model and make the S&W 908 in black and S&W 908S in stainless which are much easier to find. I am personally still a fan of the 6906 or 6904 in black. They are just tried and true great autos that fit me just right with that steep grip angle and perfect weight. Also, since they are not making them any longer, NOT due to a manufacurer error or bad design, if you find one in good condition, it should keep it's value quite well and even appreciate over time. Guns are nearly always a good investment to make. If you're interested, you can see these pistols show up in some pretty good action movies of the past 2 decades. Off the top of my head, I remember them in... Bad Boys (1992)- Marcus Burnette uses his 6906 as his backup weapon at the end of the movie. Point Break (1991)- The off-duty police officer pulls his concealed 6906 in a failed attempt to stop the bank robbery toward the end of the movie. Speed (1994)- Keanu Reeves uses a 6904 as his carry weapon. You see it after the first bus explosion for the rest of the movie, before he loses it on the subway... :barf:. Lakeview Terrace (2008)- Sam Jackson as Officer Abel carries a 6906 off-duty during his neighborhood rounds. ***Among a few others... Cheers, and I hope you find one. ~LT |

The 3913 may also fill the bill for "smallish hands." It's a bit smaller and has with less capacity that the 6906, but is a fine gun in every way if you don't need the extra rounds.

The 6906 is a great gun. My buddy carried one for many years. I preferred the 4516. I really regret getting rid of that firearm.
