any one with quickload able to help me with a 45/70 load?
my gun has a 18.5 inch barrel.
I am looking for a load with the 500 grain Hornady interlock RN bullets (.458 caliber) total over all length will need to be 2.55 the brass I use in Winchester and I use Winchester primers. I am looking to get a speed of 1000-1060 FPS. Id like to use the fastest powder possible that will do the job safely. This is for a silencer on a 45/70 any help is appreciated

I don't Quickload so I would have to find a book load for something like 4198 and work down with a chronograph. Being careful to see a chronograph reading and bullet hole every shot. A slow heavy JSP stuck in the barrel would not be a good result.

I've had success with accurate 5744, which you can load below the minimum for the listed starting load, check their website and reloaders nest has a great library of loads from members.

to get it to the oal length you might have to add a cannelure in a different location since the bullet you chose wasn't intended to be used in a lever action. I'm assuming a soft point bullet and not a fmj bullet. I think the recoil might set off a chain reaction if you used a fmj bullet

Small charges of slow powders can be dangerous, due to "flash over".
There's really not a powder that fills a reasonable amount of the case and yields the speeds you're looking for that is anything like efficient. If you use small charges of very fast powders (pistol powders), you'll be maxing out at 50% and under case fill. That means using a filler or having to tip the gun up to get the powder back against the flash hole after chambering. If I were really wanting to do this, it looks like a god candidate might be Vihtavouri N130. Depending on barrel friction, QuickLoad predicts an 80% case fill (30.0gr) will yield a max of 1234fps ignoring barrel friction, or as low as 1083 fps with friction. A charge of 24.9gr would yield between 830 and 1042fps and still be at 65% fill. This isn't terribly efficient. You'd be blowing 10-20% unburnt powder.

I am using 24.5gr of Accurate 5744 under a 425 Lead/FNGC for low 1,200's from an 18.5" GuideGun.
5744 is extremely consistant even w/ low case fill. I recommend it w/o hesitation. Accurate's website says 21.0-21.5gr under a 500 grainer will do what you want. See: http://www.accuratepowder.com/wp-con...d_data_3.5.pdf |

the problem is that jacketed bullets are much harder to push. A trail boss load that pushes a 500 grain cast bullet 1200FPS may only get 750 with a jacketed bullet.
I doubt trail boss would work. 5744 is the likely best bet but it does have some draw backs such as burnt powder left in your gun. as far as quickload goes I have never used it... is it worth the money?

Every penny! It's not perfect, by any means, but it gives you information that is impossible or far too time consuming to compile any other way. Just being able to get load data for virtually any imaginable combination of powders and bullets is worth the price and that hardly scratches the surface of what QuickLoad can do.

Note that case volume is adjusted to my experience w/ 5744 under a 425grLFNGC. This case volume apparently acts to lower pressure/velocity calculations slightly, as associated w/ a lead bullet and matching my Oehler35 actual speed measurements. Using a jacketed Interlock and reducing case volume to QuickLoad's default 79.0gr H₂O would give us ~2,000 psi more pressure and muzzle velocity of 1,070 -- still subsonic.) This likely brackets the actual result. Last edited by mehavey; July 19, 2012 at 09:29 AM. |
