CCW recommendations??

Hey guys,

My step dad is looking for a semi-auto for concealed carry. His one problem is his GIANT mitts. Wondering what you other large-pawed folks might suggest. For reference, he's shot a Khar 9mm that my brother in-law carries off-duty and he says the grips are way too small and it's hard for him to shoot well. My first inclination is a smaller Glock or Springfield XD subcompact, but I wanted to hear from you all first. Thanks!

Is he a big guy or just a normal guy with big hands? Do you think he could easily conseal a compact gun or would he have to go sub-compact?

There aren't many grips larger than a Glock with a Crimson Trace laser added...

I hesitate to recommend a gun based on that single criteria but that's the answer to the question as presented.

Red...big guy w/ big hands...6'2" 290-ish. He was looking at subcompacts, but he's open to suggestions and I personally think he could conceal a compact just fine. Based on his initial thinking, I thought the XD subcompact w/ extended mag might do the trick. Or something along those lines.

Roger that Brian. Grip size is probably his single biggest concern. He's fond of the .45 ACP (not a requirement though), so I also suggested a commander sized 1911?

I don't normally recommend Glocks but the G30 non-sf has a rather large grip size. Good size for carry. It also lets you use a grip extension and G21 13rd mags.

I've got big hands. I carry a Glock 19 Gen 4 with the largest backstrap installed. Works great.

A full size 1911 is pretty easy to conseal with a good belt and holster. It would fit a pretty large hand well. If not, the wrap around Hogue rubber grips or some of the other larger grips should add enough meat.

As an aside, the Glock 21 has a HUGE grip, but the gun is HUGE also!

My buddy with super long fingers liked the sit of the S&W M&P 9 full size the best.

The big mitts might find a double stack 1911 from STI feels real good. They have several models available in different sizes and calibers. The price tag is higher, but they make great guns right here in the U.S.

For general concealed carry/protection, I'd advise a DA only semi-auto with 3 dot night sights & backstraps if he has large hands.

Depending on his budget/$, skill level, carry style choices(cross draw, Shoulder, strong-side, pocket, etc, I'd look at these top brands.... NOTE: I lean toward the .357sig for protection-carry but the 9x19/9mm Luger, .40S&W or .45acp could work. The 10mm & .45GAP are okay but not as common.
Good choices include; the HK P30 or the P2000 LEM, the SIG Sauer P229R or P224 DAK format. Note; you can get .22LR kits & change the barrels for .357sig/.40S&W for a SIG Sauer P226/P229 model, www.SIGSauer.com .
You could train or plink with cheap(or as in 2013, less expensive) .22LR then convert to a .40 or potent .357sig.
The S&W SD9 or SD40 could be good. With added Trijicon HD 3 dot night sights. www.Trijicon.com
I like the Smith and Wesson M&P line too. I bought a new M&P 9x19mm in 2011 but didn't get to use it a lot.

The Beretta PX4 C(constant action) in .40 or 9x19mm is good. They are available with Trijicon HD night sights also.

I'd get a spur-less design to aid carry & to prevent false claims of panic or being reckless & "cocking" a semi auto pistol. DA only sidearms are now in use by 100s of sworn LE agencies & armed professionals. You could avoid a lot of civil issues or criminal investigation problems by using a DA only sidearm.

Use only factory made, well engineered handgun rounds too. Speer Gold Dot, DPX, PowRball, Remington Golden Saber, Ranger-T/T Series, Hornady Critical Duty.
Any selected carry rounds shoud be proven or perform well in the FBI protocol T&Es.

I like the M&P compact models. I have the 9mm version. Small but not tiny Holds 12 rounds of 9mm or 14 with the mec-gar + 2 base plate. Hard to beat

i'm 6'6" 275lbs. huge mitts. i can just barely get all my fingers on the grip of a walther pps with the medium size mag. it's the smallest gun i can comfortably shoot well. it conceals amazingly.

make sure he actually holds the walther with the medium size mag in it. looking at it online will trick him. it looks tiny, but somehow it fits great.

Do you know which model kahr it was? They have some that are very tiny.

I wear extra large size gloves and find the K9 very comfortable to shoot and it is still thin enough to conceal very well. You can also switch to the wood grip from the rubber and that will add about 1/3 to the thickness of the grip.
