Bullet weight?...

So I'm extremely new to reloading and it's been a great so far. Loaded up some .45 and 9mm and I still have all my fingers and the guns still work. I'm wondering what difference different weight bullets will have on reliability and accuracy. For .45 I've been using FMJ RN 230 grain and 115 grain for 9mm. My manual says that law enforcement is moving towards heavier 9mm. What about .45? There seem to be a lot lighter bullets available. What about bullet profile? RN better than HP for accuracy? Is the only purpose of a HP to increase wound size and decrease penetration? Thanks all knowing TFL forum! I've learned so much and the confidence gained from trolling allowed me to jump into reloading for myself.
