405 winchester loads
Anyone loading for the 405 winchester? If so, what powder preference do you have? Just starting to load for this caliber and wanted input from those who have tried different powders. What works best, uniform balistics ect.. Thanks 'Mo

I can't help you with any of the reloading questions.
I just want to say my God it does my heart good to see once-obsolete cartridges be rediscovered.

I just got mine and haven't had time to work up loads but my intentions are that IMR3031 should be the powder for me. I will be loading the 300 gr bullet with a max of 55.0 grs although the early Lyman books say 57.0 grs as max. I'm sure you have looked at the Hogdon site for data.
http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp Might also want to check over at http://www.handloads.com/loaddata/default.asp for data from users. Hope this is useful. |

Thanks guys! Reloading information for the 405 is pretty scarce to say the least. I can't find any information on using 3031. Figured it would be a natural. I've used 3031 for years in my 45-70's. I call it the "live long and prosper" powder for large cases!!! Those "obsolete" cartridges have taken more game than all the super fast whiz bangs put together. They demand you be a hunter rather than just a shooter!!!! 'Mo

I've settled with 300 gr. Hornady F.P.
54.5 gr IMR-4895 WLR primers And a slip on Limbsaver for the always enjoyable bench/sandbag shooting. You may want to go here for a information starting point: http://www.chuckhawks.com/405win.htm Also Ken Waters "Pet Loads" has quite a lot of information.
