keyhole

Just thought id throw this out there.
Im not a handloader but thought this might fit.
I have a 629-1 4inch.
Several years ago i bought some American Eagle 240grn hardball for some plinking (ya I know you dont plink with a .44mag but hey I wanted to)
The shots went all over! about 50% did a keyhole! That is if i could keep it on paper.
Never had another problem with any other ammo in that gun, just this one box.
Any thoughts as to what may have happened?

Undersized bullets will do that. Also not enough bearing surface on the rifling to get enough spin to stabilize the bullet. One positive thing about it. You know what ammo not to buy.

The loaded bullet may also have had slight damage to the trailing edge. As the bullet exits the barrel, if it doesn't leave cleanly, a burr or a slight malformation of the base can cause a bullet to keyhole.
