Scoping a Yugo M48
Hey guys. Im getting a Yugo M48 Mauser for Christmas, and I'm interested in scoping it. I'm going to test it out for accuracy, but i intend on putting a scope on it. I know they have mounts you drill and screw into the receiver, but i really dont want to permanently alter the weapon. I know Jmeck makes scope mounts for the Mosin Nagant that wraps around the chamber, do you know if anybody makes something like that for the Mauser? Or can i use one of those for my Mauser? I definitely do not want a scout mount. Thanks in advance.

The "clamp-on" type, which "wrap around the receiver" as you describe, are unreliable. They WILL slip at some point, altering the zero of your rifle.
For the M48, your only GOOD choices are a LER ("scout" type mount)....or conventional drill and tap mounts for the receiver. Any other types are a poor compromise, at best. One company (I can't remember the name) used to make a cantilevered mount, which attached to the rear sight base on the barrel (a la the scout mount), but projected to the rear, to allow scope mounting above the receiver. However, they are out of business, AFAIK. |

If you go the drill and tap route, select two piece mounts. The one piece usually are made for the full length "standard" Model 98 action and (probably) won't fit the M48 Yugo.

The Leupold Standard one-piece mount for the Model 98 works fine on the M48. I use them preferentially on the Intermediates.

I can't help with your wishing to mount a scope but I can offer just a SMIDGE of help -- in reassuring you that your initial idea that going with a LER "scout" style forward scope sucks. Been down that road, wasn't at all happy with it and it's not a cheap venture for something you do NOT like.
You get the bonus of the rifle looking ridiculous as a side order. So that's my help -- follow your instincts and avoid the "scout" scope.
