Japanese Arisaka 38 cleaning rod

How do you get the cleaning rod to release, I've tried screwing it out but it just spins in place.

If I remember correctly (my Type 38 is in Pennsylvania, I'm in Virginia) on the underside of the barrel there's tab like device a couple of inches back from the front iron/bayonet lug.

Push that in while pulling the rod.

I just checked my type 99, it does have that setup, really easy to miss if you don't know what to look for, thanks mike.

Like some of the older Mausers, that latch is dual purpose. Pushed in part way, it releases the cleaning rod; pushed in further, it releases the upper band.

Thanks, it worked. I pushed the metal strip (end closest to the bayonet lug) and out it came.
