Depends on the powder you're using. I use 450s for some ball powder loads, but use 400s or BR-4s more often.

I use standard primers for loading 223. Even with H335 and W748.

Pardon me for exhuming a past post, but I have just started getting into reloading. I started with .223 and used WIN748 ball powder and CCI small rifle magnum primers.

By using the Lee double disk powder measure, I am dropping about a 25.5 gn powder charge instead of 26.2 gn.

I am planning on shooting these in my new Robinson Armament XCR, AR-15 type rifle, but with an adjustable AK-47 type piston gas system.

My question is; with the hotter primers and the lower charge, will I balance out and have an acceptable safe round that will cycle the action on the XCR?

Thanks for any advice and/or opinions from experienced reloaders.

It's hard to answer because I don't know what grain bullet you intend to use. If you are using 55 grain then it would be questionable because you are starting below the starting load of 26 grains. If you are using a 62 grain bullet then you are at max which is never a good place to start. I usually start just a little above the starting load in the manual and work up from there.

Edit: I just wanted to add that you picked a great powder to start with. W748 is one of my favorite powders for 223.
