Home made muzzleloading tools?
Any of you creative types ever make any do-it-yourself ML accessories?
Care to share? No matter how simple or complex, I'd like to hear about it. I've made a less-than-sturdy palm saver for the ram rod by drilling a hole through 1 side of a small segment of PVC pipe with cloth stuffed in it to keep the end of the rod from scraping off slivers. Like a T handle. I also made a fairly flimsy powder funnel. I took a clamshell plastic packaging and cut a hole in the corner. So I pour the powder into the rectangular "box" shape, then close the box, and pour it out of the corner with a hole into the measuring tube. I used a sewing needle to clean the breech plug channel but it never quite reaches full diameter unless it's to get stuck at the eye. |

My loads for my .54 are pretty tight and a short starter isn't quite enough so I made a longer one. I make cleaning rods for my pistols. They're not pretty but they work really well.
Top is a factory made short starter, next is my long one and bottom is a cleaning rod. |

I make many things. But I don't use plastic for my ml accessories. Usually, antler, horn, bone, leather, wood, etc.

ALthough I've made a couple of possibles bags from scratch ( leather hide cut to pattern, sewn, etc),
I made this one (BELOW) by converting a leather woman's shoulder bag/purse - and also made the short starter and the ramrod (from an orange fiberglas rod, shortened & capped) I've also made patch knives and cap boxes (from a section of thick antler, cored & plugged) . I also devised a set of mold handles that are...
....Spring loaded for consistent pressure applied to the mold.
I can really get some good consistent round balls out of these molds.

I made a ball starter. Used an old 9mm case to make the tip. Ground off most of it and opened up the flash hole so a screw could go through to secure it to the end of the dowel I made from oak. Screw is recessed in the primer pocket and easily replacable.

I made a ball starter out of three pieces of dowell. One around 1 " in diameter and the other two probably 3/8 of an inch. The smaller diameter pieces stuck out of the larger one at right angles to it and each other. So you could just start the ball with the end of the big piece or drive it in 1" or 3" with one of the others.
I also took a flat piece of of hard wood and drilled two holes in it - a little over 1/2 inch in diameter. After some sanding and smoothing I could put a ball and a greased patch in both and press them out and directly into the muzzle with the ball starter. Both had leather thongs so I could hang them from something I was wearing. They worked pretty good on the range. I've never had to fire a follow up shot from the .50 caliber Hawken I made them for. |
