M107 A1 + Laser Assisted rounds

.50 with a laser assisted round. (Assisted = you have to fire within 10 MOA vs. Guided = fire in the direction and forget) The technology is there. A previous employer didn't want to go there so we canned the effort..... However , there is technically an obscure public domain 'how to' on this in the key technology areas (putting it in the obscure public domain was to impede others patent efforts in the relm). Is a virtually guaranteed hit for that big buck @ 2 miles in light winds worth $100/round?

Anyone interested?

No thanks...

I know machines can hit things far away. There's no satisfaction, no accomplishment to letting them do it for me.

Guaranteed hits would no different, in terms of accomplishment, than shooting them in a cage. IMO.

Thanks.

6.5-06 is essentially equal in performance to the 6.5-284, For LR shooting they are comparable ballisticly to the .300 magnums in all but the heaviest .308 bullet weights.

There is a wide variety of excellent .264 bullets available for just about any shooting you want to do.

It shoots the light (for caliber) bullets nearly as fast as the .25-06, but the "light" .264 bullets are better ballisticly than the "light" .257, so the difference downrange is minimal.

It shoots heavier bullets (140gr and above) as fast or faster than the .270, the only real advantage of the .270 is the choice in heaviest bullets (160gr) is better with the .270. 160gr 6.5 bullets are limited to round nose.

The down side is that as a wildcat, it is handload only, but as wildcats go though, it isn't all that "wild", simply neck-size 25.06 cases and you are ready to load. All the major loading manuals list data, and loading dies are off the shelf items.

AI-AW .338 Lapua Magnum w/ Trijicon TARS

Like this, but in snow camo pattern and with the Trijicon TARS scope:

My choice is subject to frequent change!

I probably would have said a MRAD in 338 Lapua Magnum, or a M200 from Chey-Tac in .408 but after seeing the 14.9mm SOP rifle and cartridge earlier today I think I would choose that. If you guys haven't seen it google it.

Quote taken from www.thefirearmblog.com "The 14.9mm SOP is an incredible extra long range rifle project that a number of people at Snipers Hide have been collaborating on. The huge rifle fires a very long and heavy projectile with a high ballistic coefficient giving it extreme accuracy. It has 0.5 MOA accuracy at 3000 yards and remains supersonic out to 5400 yards (5 kilometers). The 14.9mm SOP cartridge case is formed from a 20mm Vulcan case. The 1,690 grain projectile leaves the muzzle at 3,350 fps with 42,104 ft/lbs of energy (that is not a typo!). This is almost twice the muzzle energy of the 14.5×114mm Russian and 14.5mm JDJ. It has more kinetic energy at the muzzle than a 20mm Vulcan, and far more kinetic energy downrange, although the Vulcan is carrying an explosive payload "

While I'd love a Chey-Tec, I have my M1A Super match for iron sights and just finishing a Remington 700/5R (w/Jewell trigger and a USO SN-3 5-25X TPAL scope placed on Badger rings/base).

The M1A will out shoot me, and the 700 should as well (even with that big chunk of glass on top) once completed.

The M82A1 would undoubtedly be the coolest "toy"...

But, since accuracy is the stated objective, the MCM .50 Light Benchrest...

http://mcmillanusa.com/mcmillan-rifl...tion-50lbr.php

Mortal calibers just ain't in the same league as the .50, .338. and .408...

Dream big, or go home.

I'll have one of those some day as well! Of cousre it will be a reproduction as I'm sure I'll never want to pay the price for an original. I don't know if I'll be able to ring the gongs at 1000 yards with it but I'll sure try.

I can't seem to remember the effective range of a 105mm howitzer.
But on a serious note, a cheytac m200 in .408 should do the trick.

Your long range dream rifle.
I have wanted a Barrett MRAD in .338 Lapua Mag since the day they came out with a Leupold Mk 4 scope to get out to 1000 yards with accuracy. I consider that my long range dream rifle. What would be yours? (If you own one already, what is it?)

Note: Im talking 1000+ Yards here
CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The Firing Line, nor the staff of TFL assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

Purpose:
I want to use Quickload and Quicktarget and my hunting and practicing experiences to compare the 338 and 7mmRM cartridges.
------------------------------
Assumptions:
8 moa elevation adjustment for a big game hunting shot is the limit.
1800 fps minimum for good bullet expansion.
10 pounds rifle weight is the threshold of too heavy.
----------------------------
Independent variables:
70,000 psi peak pressure
scope 2" above barrel bore
barrel 26" long
Pick best Hodgdon extreme powder
200 yard zero
338s use 250 gr Nosler Partition Gold boat tail bullets
7mm use 150 gr Nosler Ballistic tip boat tail bullets
------------------------------
Dependent variables
338 Lapua Mag 90.3 gr H4381sc 2945 fps, 515 yards down 8moa, 647 yards 1800 fps
338 Rem Ultra 89.2 gr H4381sc, 2901 fps, 507 yards down 8 moa, 625 yards 1800 fps
338 Winche Mag 69.4 gr H4350, 2773 fps, 492 yards down 8moa, 560 yards 1800 fps
7mmRem Mag 70.3 gr H4381sc, 3250 fps, 582 yards down 8moa, 822 yards 1800 fps
------------------------
Discussion and analysis:
I can get good accuracy with the 7mmRemMag at 10 pounds rifle, scope, bipod, and ammo when shooting 150 gr.
The 338s should do as well at 16.7 pounds when shooting 250 gr.
Maybe the 338s do not need to be that heavy, because they do not need to be as accurate, because they can not shoot as far.
-------------------
Conclusion:
I will not hunt long range with my 338s.
I will instead hunt long range with my 7mmRM rifles.

Being a more traditional nitwit, I would pick a Gibbs 1903-A4 which I WILL own sometime this year.
Other than that my 700 with a jewel trigger only with a tactical stock which I am working on.Long range shooting depends on the person behind the trigger. For me anything beyond 500 is TOO long range shooting. We all must know our limitations.

I started playing around with a Rem 721 in 30-06 about forty years ago. Had fun with load development and at that time though 500 yds was long range. About twenty years ago I got into the M1A platform, then the 6.5G and the 7.62 AR. A Chey Tac or some .338LM may come along some day.

Some days I'm happy with a .22lr at 200yds.
