30-30 Powder
I'm about to start reloading all my 30-30 brass that i have saved for the last few years and need to figure out what is the best powder for this caliber?. I would greatly appreciate some suggestions from those that have loaded for the 30-30 before. I have been reading and was kinda leaning towards IMR-3031. Thank's alot.

I have used lots of 3031 in 30-30s and it works fine.
Currently I am using 748 because it flows better in my powder measure. Be safe and have fun ! -steve |

My older Lyman manual list IMR-3031 as it's powder for accuracy loads with 150 gr. bullets and W748 for 170 gr. bullets. When I ever get around to working on my 30-30 loads thats what I'm going to use.

30/30 reloads
Sir, I have had good results (deer hunting) with my Win lever-action, utilizing the Barnes 150 grn XFN bullet, really pounds them. I have a supply of H322, so thats the only powder I have practical experience with. The load I use is 31.0 grns, resulting in 2216 fps.

Yep, IMR 3031 is a good powder in .30-30. I've had good results with H335 and Ramshot TAC as well. My only gripe with 3031 is that the longer granules don't meter as well as the finer ball powders like TAC and H335.
Lots of people swear by BLC-2, RL7 and H4895, although I haven't tried them.

I had best results w/ H335 for 150 gr ...... both for consistency (smallest SD) and best velocity.

I've used 748, RL15, and 3031 with success.

The Lyman 49th Edition Manual lists IMR 4064 under a 170 grain bullet as being the potentially most accurate.
My limited experience with the 30-30 has shown that 33.5 grains of H380, a 170 Core-Lokt, and a Winchester large rifle primer gives 7/8" at 50 yards. I tried a few loads with a bit more H380 (34.0 and 34.5) and started seeing pressure signs. |

IMR3031, WW748 are my choice of powders for 30-30.

WW 748, BLC2, and H335 in that order are my picks. IMR 3031 has probably been used to waylay a lot of deer, but unless IMR makes it flow like 4320 I'll stick to the ball numbers. CB.

Varget is also a good choice. I've been using it for the past couple of years with good results.

I have some good loads in 125gr Sierra JHP with AA2230.
IMR 4064 and Varget work for 150gr FN, and 160gr FTX. I have IMR 3031 sitting on my bench for years. I like the old cans.

I've had the best luck with 4064 when shooting light bullets. I am no longer trying to knock down a deer, just hit the 8" gong at 200 yards, but I would suspect that a somewhat slower powder would be better suited to the heavier bullets.
