They do have a store right down the road from me. I will go in there.
Went into cabelas and looked at what they had. MSM spitfire magnum is what they jad for a nipple. How are these comparible to musket nipples? I went ahead and got one because my cvs nipple needed to be replaced anyway. |

Ok so this MSM 6x.75 nipple does not seem to fit my CVA Frontier. The thread width is narrower on this MSM Nipple.
Can someone please tell me the correct size for my gun? is it 6x1? |

There is also a 1/4 x 28 thread that is said to fit CVA but I cannot get specification on what guns they fit.

I recommend Treso brand nipples. They're made from a very hard alloy called Ampco and have a smaller flash channel than standard nipples so they concentrate the hot gas better and last longer. The Track of the Wolf catalog number for your gun is CVA-A; the nipple is Treso part number 11-50-05. |

So what does the 1/4 x 28 nipple go to? Thanks for the info. I thought about picking one up on ebay, but I am going to check you suggestion out first.

1/4 X 28 fits the Thompson Center rifles.
The first one that you bought, 6 X .75 fits the Lyman/Cabela's/Investarms rifles. CVA/Traditions sidelocks usually always take 6 X 1. |

Awesome. I know am a little more wise. Next question. I have TC maxiball super penetration these are 320 grain. Do i use the same powder loads of 50 up to 100 scale? Dothese need to be seated with a patch or naked on top of the powder. They are pre lubricated.

They can be seated naked, or on top of a wool wad or an over powder card.
Same basic range of powder charges although they produce more felt recoil. Try to make sure that the Maxi doesn't creep up the bore and come of off the powder charge if the muzzle is pointed downward after being loaded. Last edited by arcticap; May 1, 2011 at 12:22 PM. |

A maxi ball won't creep, it's a ball starter fit. A minie of the correct size won't creep either even tho its a ramrod fit.

My experience with Maxi's is that they don't begin to group well until you approach the maximum load in a TC muzzle loader.

Which segways into my next question. I do not have a Thompson but a CVA side lock. Are the Maxi's going to give me more accuracy than round balls? Is the max load for a CVA Frontier 100 or 120?

it depends on the rifling in the CVA. Some of them came with a 1:60 twist which won't work well at all with conicals. Most did come with a 1:48 which isn't ideal for either one but is a happy medium for both. Generally a conical is easier top work up a load for but a round ball has the edge on accuracy once you get a powder/patch combo worked up. The conical retains accuracy at a greater distance than the round ball.

Maxiballs come in different .50 weights [320 gr. & 370 gr.] which make it difficult to predict their accuracy.
Make sure that your bore is smooth because in a rough bore such as yours lead conicals can cause leading. I would start with patched round balls to see how it shoots those first. Generally there's no need to load more than 100 grains of powder in a .50 sidelock. Last edited by arcticap; May 1, 2011 at 12:38 PM. |

If I shoot patched balls first, what to I need to look for to determine whether or not I will get a leading problem from conicals?

The patched balls won't be touching the rifling to cause leading, only the lubed patches will be touching the rifling.
Look for cuts in the patches to see if they're getting torn up, burned or badly frayed around the edges. If yes, then a thicker patch can be tried or a wool wad or an over powder card placed under the ball. And depending on the viscosity of patch lube, more of it can be added to the patches or the product can be switched. But leading being caused by PRB's could hardly be an issue. However trying PRB's first would form a baseline of accuracy to compare other projectiles and loads to, all while knowing that barrel leading from shooting conicals wasn't causing any accuracy problem since none had even been fired from the clean barrel yet. If the bore is really rough, there's a new CVA .50 Frontier rifle barrel for sale on eBay for $85.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Powder-CVA...item2eb4d09b02 The seller's store is Pats Sporting Goods and the barrel is listed under CVA: http://stores.ebay.com/Pats-Sporting...id=p4340.l2563 Last edited by arcticap; May 2, 2011 at 10:45 AM. |
