Are Mossberg 500 Cartridge Stops Interchangeable ?

Are Mossberg 500 Cartridge Stops Interchangeable ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have owned a 12 ga Mossberg 500 for years. Don't shoot it much, but when I do, it might be 50 - 100 clays a weekend at the range, a handful of times per year.

Just recently I had a cycling issue. Being handy, I did my homework and called Mossberg. They were good enough to send me replacement Cartridge Stop(s). When the package arrived, two stops were in the envelope, one for a 12 ga and one for a 20ga, they looked exactly the same, just stamped 12 and 20.

Now here is what is wild.. I take out my original Cartridge Stop and noticed it was a 20 Ga It came that way from the factory ! Are Mossberg 500 Cartridge Stops 12 vs 20 gauge the same ?

I have now replaced the old 20 ga one with the 12 gauge one and cycled through four 12 ga Snap Caps several times. The mechanism seems to work fine. Hopefully that will translate to the range, the last time I did that, the live shells failed to cycle as well as the dummies.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks

If it works it works. That's all I can say. If you can get the 12ga one to fit I'd probably try that first but if not use the 20 ga. I can see how it could really hurt anything since its just a cartridge stop

Gotta' think, since they are labeled differently, they probably are.
And they must be close enough, that your gun got the wrong one initially.
Maybe it worked ok until it got some wear on it.

what is a cartridge stop? I thought that was the wooden dowel used to prevent more then "X" number of rounds in the tube?

Cartridge Stop

Grizz,

A Cartridge stop is a 5" stamped piece of metal that is part of the receiver mechanism. It has complementary stamped piece of metal on the other side called a cartridge interupter. Both these pieces fit on the inner portion of the receiver housing. They are not screwed in or bolted down. The shell elevator cycles between these pieces.

The cartridge stop, basically like its name implies, stops the next shell in the magazine tube from advancing once the elevator chambers the current round. If it malfunctions (ie is bent), two things can occur, either the shell will not advance and stay stuck in the magazine tube, or all shells in the magazine tube will fall out at your feet. Either way a pain.

Griz, you are thinking about the "federal migratory bird plug" or "magazine plug "...

Yes. They are dimensionally identical. The only difference is the 12 and 20 stamp.
