bolt action 12 ga

i have heard of some rare birds like bolt action 12 ga shotguns before but never seen one, this last week at deer camp a buddy says he was going to buy one off a friend for 70 bucks... an old Ruger 12 ga bolt action?...

1: anyone ever heard of a Roog shotgun like this?
2: is there any advantage at all in a bolt action shot gun?

as always i have to fill the firearm curiosity gap in my brain!

I have an ancient Stevens 45/66 bolt action 12 guage that I got as a gift from my uncle when I told him I wanted to get into gunsmithing. It was purchased for $50 and was heavily rusted, but the gun still functioned and the 3 round magazine was rather interesting.

I have yet to do anything with it, but all it needs to get back in shape is a reblueing and a new bead sight.

Here is a picture of my (top) Marlin 5510 "Super Goose" Bolt action 10ga.
Below is my Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag. Just a reference in size.

I say go for it. They are different. That's why I got the 5510. The $225 price tag made even harder to pass up, when I've seen them go online for as much as $500.

As for the older ones the barrel screws on and they will kick you harder.

Now when it comes to the new guns the savage 210 is a big rugged slug gun. The bolt locks with 3 ears. You can get a 4oz trigger for it also.

I don't think Ruger EVER made a bolt action shotgun.

Dad won one in a raffle back in the 50's, I believe that it was a Remington. He never shot it and I probably swapped it for a Luger or Broomhandled Mauser. I DO remember that the woodwork was pretty cheesy for the 50's.

Browning makes one on the A bolt rifle design. A bolt action slug gun has the same advantages as a bolt action rifle over a pump, semi-auto, or lever action. It's going to be a bit more accurate at longer distances. It's going to kick like a mean SOB though. I'm trying to get my hands on a browning now so I can hunt with it next year.

I have an old Stevens bolt action that was my wifes fathers. the barrell has been cut down to 18 1/2" and will knock the snot out of you

if you don't hold on tight. My brother in law shot it one time and woudn't shoot it any more. I called him a wimp and shot it three more times just to make a point, of course he thinks a .243 Winchester has a lot of recoil

too.

First, Ruger has never made a bolt action shotgun.
