Forming die necessary?

With 250 Savage cases going out of sight, I've thought of forming from .308 brass which is plenty plentiful. The 250 case has more taper. Can this be done with my FL die or will a forming die be necessary? Anybody with experience have a clue? Search didn't yield much. Thanks.

You will need a forming die and a neck reaming die to form 250 Savage out of 308 brass. This is because the sizing die does not generally push the shoulder back far enough to allow for rebound of the brass. RCBS used to sell complete forming die sets. You will also have a lot less case volume, so load carefully. It might just be easier to use 22-250 brass and run it into a sizing die to expand the neck.

Midway has Winchester .250 brass for $20.99 for 50 pieces.

Not a terrible price, but a lot more expensive than .22-250 brass.

Then again, Midway is backordered on all Winchester and Remington .22-250 brass...

Thanks for the replies, Scorch and Mike.
I thought of using 22-250, but thought this might thin the neck out too much. The price of forming dies is steep, so it's sure worth a try. Annealing the necks first might cut down on culls. Thanks again.

Try fire forming your cases before you start step sizing them.
