Is the 45 acp being phased out?
I am looking to buy a handgun and it looks like I'm only going to be able to afford one for a while. The reason I ask is because I don't want a round that is going to be rendered obsolete in the next 20 years. Which caliber would you recommend? I am considering a nine but I hate the fact that I just can't find ammo for it right now.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Heck no the 45 acp is not going anywhere. Not in the forseeable future anyway. It's probably more popular today than ever.

+1 to above statement.
The .45 round is most definitely not being phased out anytime soon. In fact, I would guess it would be one of the last ones to do so. Very popular round, not to mention 1911's have quite a fan base.

No, the .45 acp is not going anywhere....and you find it in more platforms today than ever....( 1911's, in Sig Sauer model 220's , Springfield XD's -- even revolvers....)...etc.
------------- I'm confident this temporary shortage of 9mm ammo ....will go away - as soon as the profiteers and foolishness about stockpiling ammo guys ( run out of money ) ...and common sense returns..... 9mm ammo supplies - have nothing to do with any potential high capacity magazine laws or assualt weapon potential bans....is just "panic" and foolishness.. ------------ a 9mm is still a smart buy ....and prices and availability of guns will calm down as well ....maybe not anytime soon on handguns that will hold mags of over 10 rds....but there are 1911's out there in 9mm as well ( with 10 rd mags ) ...from a variety of companies that make 1911's ( Springfield, Kimber, Wilson Combat, etc ) ....but in my local shops a variety of Sig Sauers, H&K's and other guns in 9mm are still available ( not so much on popular Glock or XD models....but they'll come back in stock too )....just give it some time... Besides, even if you can only buy a handgun with a 10rd mag....so what, you can learn to reload that weapon inside of 3 sec easily ..../ not all of us that carry concealed handguns - carry mags over 10 rd anyway .../ a lot of us still carry guns like 1911's ( 8 +1 rds of .45 acp ), Sig 239's 8+1 of 9mm or 7+1 in .40S&W, 1911's in 9mm 10 + 1 rds ...../ or even revolvers with 6 rds.../ high capacity mags are a big part of the discussion ...and maybe you want them, maybe you think you have to have them, some of us think its no big deal.... But everyone should buy - and carry - the guns they want.... But don't get too caught up in this buying frenzy right now ....and there are a lot of really good used guns out there too...or buy a good revolver or something else that you want / get to a range that rents a lot of different guns...talk to a lot of gun owners...find out what they own / why they bought certain guns.....there is a lot to it .... Just look at the increasing number of manufactures putting out 1911's in the .45ACP and it is apparent it's not going anywhere but up in popularity.

What caliber can you find ammo for? I can't find any other than 17HMR and 22 Short.

In my area, all of it is available ...not at all stores...but its available ...with 9mm target ammo ( Federal white box ) costing around $ 21 - $ 24 for a box of 50 rounds...
but there are ranges and gun stores in my area ....that have quite a bit of 9mm, .40S&W, .45 acp, .357 mag, .44 mag....etc ..../ hardly anyone has any AR ammo .... even the gunshows in my area....all have ammo / but 9mm was around $24 a box last month ...might be more this month.../ but I understand it varies a lot by region of the country. ( but the $ 10 for a box of 50 rds of 9mm ammo at Wal Mart days may be over ).... |

The Marine Corps just re-adopted the 1911 as the M45 in .45 ACP. A lot of law enforcement is moving back to it, and I believe it's optional for many SWAT teams.
I don't think the .45 is going anywhere. There are a zillion different 1911 manufacturers right now, and the price keeps going up. Sig, HK, S&W, Glock, Springfield, Ruger, and others are all making polymer versions as well. All I want is a bunch more 1911s in .45 ACP - Government, Officers, and anything else you can build. |

If I may then recommend the M982 Excalibur instead of the already obsolete
.45 ACP.Readily available from Bofors. |

No way, the .45acp is not going anywhere. If anything it is making a big comeback. In the past year Ruger added 3 .45acp pistols to their lineup, the SR1911, SR1911 commander, and the SR45, and I'm sure soon to come SR45C.

I see .45 ACP lasting long after .40 S&W, especially since 1911s will probably remain popular like Colt SAAs and other single-action revolvers and even black-powder guns long after some new ammunition technology takes over.

The 45 acp is gaining in popularity. Many local and some State PDs are switching over, (thank you M&P 45 and some G21s.) Many many tact teams already carry or switched over to the 1911. If a mag ban goes into effect I believe you will see more 45 caliber semi autos.

You guys think that it would be smart to wait a few months to get one? Or are prices up for good?

Why wait, there are several 1911 style pistols available in the $500 to $800 range that are good and have a good warranty to boot.

I'd bet money that the 9mm will go extinct before the .45 ACP does.

But it's academic, because most 1911s are also outlawed by the NY state law. The language of the law calls for a magazine with a capacity not greater than 7 rounds AND which cannot be readily converted to hold more than 7 rounds. The standard, flush fit, 7-round GI magazine can be converted to hold 8 rounds in less than a minute, just by swapping the follower and spring. In fact, many 1911s being sold today come with flush-fit, 8-round magazines. To satisfy the NY state law, you'd have to buy a compact (Officers ACP size) 1911. They have a shorter grip and the magazine was originally a 6-round (with the "enhanced" version holding 7). |
