Crow Hunting

Where we hunt for deer, there seem to be hundreds of crows which constantly cackle, and scream. I've seen electronic crow calls in magazines and was wondering - is crow hunting common? Do you just go out and try to blast them as they fly over? No one I know has ever been crow hunting - nor can they figure why anyone would want to. It would seem to be a great reason to continue going into the woods after deer season ends. Your experiences and any info leads would be appreciated

How you hunt crow depends on how you like to hunt.
Are you a bird hunter that want's to brush up on some fast wing shooting? If so, I recommend calling them, either with a mouth call, or an electronic caller. They have actuall "crow calls" that sound like crow talk, butyou can also use a rabbit in distress varmint call, I've had them come in while calling dogs many times. Be sure to wear camoflauge, and conceal yourself well in brush, or a blind of some type. Crows have awesome vison and will spot you if you're not careful, also don't make any movement until you're ready to shoot.

OR....

Do you like to use a rifle and pick off targets from long ranges? If so, I recommend using bait. Either gut piles from big-game season, left overs from any small game adventure, or scouting for road kill and farmyard carcasses. (drag the road kill aways from traffic.) Set your self up from 50-400 yards away (your preference) and get ready. I would use a couple crow cackles, or a squeel on a rabbit in distress call to get the first few birds in the area, they'll do all the calling for you after that, Move as little as pissible, they'll pick up on it and head out if you dont, but most the time they'll come back again and again till the carcass is gone.

Why hunt crows? Are they edible? Do they damage crops?

One other sujestion get some crow decoys and a fake owl. Tie string on the dekes so you can toss them up into trees.
7.5 and 6 shot works best, but don't try crow hunting unless your prepaired to get hooked. It the most addicting thing I've ever done.

Have any friends who are farmers or just have a large garden?
I'm friends with a few guys who grow corn and one of them has even offered to buy my shells to blast 'em. My method is simple. Sit in a corn field with a 12ga. and #6 magnums. You can't accuse me of hunting over a baited field since I'm not hunting. I'm merely protecting the crop from a nusiance.

Uses? The only use I know of is to make an extremely effective scarecrow ... wire the spread-eagle carcass to a coat hanger and hang it up close to the garden.
Just for kicks and experience, I cooked a couple of the things once. Pretty nasty. Gave me a new understanding of the expression about eating crow.

Shoot only Field crows. Leave the big Carrion crows alone. They help keep the roads clean and in some states they are protected.
