The Ruger Old Army

My old army I bought in 1972. It has a 45-70 rifle barrel on it. I reamed the
chambers to .460 and shoot a .465 ball. It likes 40 grs. of the old Hodgdon
Curtis & Harvey FFF.

Unique Piece! I like it, however I'd have cut the factory barrel down and used it so as to use the more available .457 ball. But that's cheap 'ol me. Looks like it's seen alot of use. I like that also as I shoot everything I own, alot. Thanks for posting the pic.................Mike

Interesting and unique conversion. Please explain the black grip frame? Is it aluminium?

Yes

Yes it is, also as you can see I put in a trigger stop. The whole thing was
black well blue, when it came from the factory in 1972. At one time I color
case hardened the frame, but most of that has worn off. I will be shooting
it at the Nationals at Friendship next month.

Old Army regrets

I also bought a O.A. along about 1974 when I lived in Atlanta. Let someone talk me into trading if for a modern pistol. That has been 16 to 18 years and I still regret the trade. Would love to have that pistol back. I last shot at the Nationals in 1980 still have fond memories of the trips.

don't know but since Ruger has ceased production you can bet the price on 'em has jumped. I wouldn't part w/mine unless a princely sum. I have the S/S model.

Price

Used blued Rugers are around 250-300 in the Kansas City area. At gun shows
the SS are going for 350. I know a guy that bought 6 new in the box for
275 each. I really think they will be going for double that in short order.

My 200th edition is stainless and has been fired, but very little. I set up one to use a round ball and the other a conical bullet for deer hunting.

There was not enough adjustment in the sight to use both loads. I had to use a higher front sight for the round ball with 40 grs of FFF.

With the conical bullet, I used 32 grs of FFF. Can't remember last time I shot either one of them.

Old Price

Forgot to tell you all, I bought my Ruger wholesale in 1972 for 72.00
Would't it be nice to have a boat load at that price? Around the same time
I bought my "Navy Arms" 58 Zoli Musket for 78.00

Nine Ruger Old Armies?

Geez, kinda like them, don't you? I've got three myself but they're all different. There's a blued and stainless 7 1/2" bbl with adjustable sights and one 5 1/2 stainless.

"Tina"

For a person not wanting a 20th Century BP Rev...and a avid shooter /collector of alot of 19th Century Revs...I never wanted the ROA and had no use for one.
Until one day on an Auction bid I ended up with one...I blame Pohill and Sundance44 for most of me owning one... So now I have a start on my 20th Century BP Revs...
Meet /"Tina"

Bought mine used a couple of years ago for $275. IMO Ruger made a mistake by discontinuing them. Based on what they're selling for on the used market now, Ruger could have raised the price a couple of hundred dollars and still sold all they could make.

I like about everything but their SA's. I've had a couple but didn't keep them long. Just don't care for the way they operate.
