Range ammo sufficient for defense?
Does WWB or other brands of range/target/practice ammo have enough stopping power to be used as a defensive cartridge?
The ones I'm most interested in (especially the .45...) would be 165gr .40 S&W FMJ FN and 230gr .45 ACP FMJ . |

I would say they have as much "stopping power" as any other FMJ of the calilber. The question is, are you giving up functional reliability? Some say yes, some say no. Do you plan on getting in so many gunfights that the price of ammunition is a factor?

FMJ bullets are not what I would bet my life on ,,,, sure, if you hit the Bad guy right between the lookers or in the old pump they will take care of business but are essentially a target bullet. There are litterally dozens of good defense bullets available in a rapidly expanding hollowpoint style that maximize both terminal damage and knockdown power. Although this sounds brutal and unforgiving just remember that second place in a life and death situation is death, yours not theirs. Not looking to start trouble, just to be able to finish it .

Not so much concerned with pricing of defensive rounds as I am about reliability. I shoot a lot more (~200 rounds a week) of the target/range stuff than I do the high price defense rounds. I just have a much higher comfort level with the feeding & going bang when I pull the trigger, that's all.
My nightstand pistol has the high price stuff in the first mag but not sure if I want my car gun to have the same, because it is exposed to a much harsher environment, so reliability becomes a higher concern. |

Let me put it this way:
I do not/will not carry FMJ because I have JHP ammo and pistols that will feed it reliably and shoot to point of aim. If I did not have JHP ammo, or had a pistol which would not feed JHP, I would carry FMJ before I would carry a sharp stick. (Actually I would fix it or get rid of it and get one that worked reliably.) Nonetheless, FMJ ammo is far from useless. And if that is your choice, go with it. Some will agree, some will disagree. May I suggest another option, one that many of us use? Fire your carry JHPs and replace them every xx days. Some will say 30, some will say 90 or 180 days. In an event, you get somewhat regular practice with your carry ammo, and you get fresh ammo on a regular basis. |
