Hornady 45-70 leverevolution cases

I have some spent leverevolution cases and they measure 2.030" compared to the 2.095' on a winchester case with hollow points fatory rounds. Can i still load the smallers hornady cases with honady 300gr hollow points. Or do i need to reload the 325grn FTX bullets in the shorter cases. The Hornady Manual says trim cases to 2.095 for the hornady 300grn hollow points. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks Brent

Wow, a 24" cartridge (just kidding). Since the 45-70 headspaces on the rim the slightly shorter case shouldn't make a difference; unless it gives you issue loading, e.g. from a lever action with tubular magazine.

I have found that the cases Hornady uses for 45 Colt and 357 mag flextip ammo is also about .050 shorter than standard. I have heard that it so they can keep the cartridge oal standard while using the flextip bullets. I don't know if that is fact but just what I have heard.

a big 45-70 fan... not a big fan of shorter than SAMMI length cases...

I have some L.E. ammo & it shot fine, but IMO, Hornady really dropped the ball, they should not be able to call that ammo 45-70, if the cases are shorter than SAMMI specifications...

if reloading, start out ( at least) 10% reduced... the shorter cases can / will increase cartridge pressures over standard length cases... with all the new reloaders out there, there is a serious probability that someone may destroy a weaker action gun, with medium loads & Hornady cases causing higher than expected case pressures

I've understood that the reasons the case is shorter on the LE cartridges is because the Ogive is longer on the LE bullets. The shorter case is needed so the crimp isn't on the Ogive. The way I see it, if the LE bullets shoot fine from the shorter case, a Flat Nosed bullet with the same, or more, bullet shank (full caliber, straight shank...of course) will be just fine, as long as they feed. Which, if they fed well with the LE's, they should feed equally as well with other bullets, IMHO.

case's

Just seat bullet cannelure .065 out from case. Work up load as usual. We are only talking about a 1/16" case reduction.
