Gunbroker: S&W 4506 sells for $1450... Is this crazy?
OK... I know there's a bit of panic sweeping gun owners and gun buyers right now... I get it... I understand why ARs are going for over double their normal retail prices. I can wrap my tiny little brain around the fact that standard and hi-cap mags are in short supply and that semi-auto pistols are in high demand.
Seriously, I get it... What I don't get is this: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=329229574 I have owned over a dozen 3rd gen S&W pistols in various calibers over the years. I love and miss the ones I've sold or traded. I recommend them to people who may want something used and are really high value. My last 45XX gun was a 4506-1... I think I sold it off for about $500. Yup, it was big and heavy, but man what a fabulous gun! All that said and as much as I love 3rd gen S&Ws... $1450 for an early model 4506 with 2 mags is CRAZY... or maybe I'm crazy. Am I missing something here or are things coming off the rails?

Yes!
Is the 4506 NIB? Was it Vic Mackey's sidearm from The Shield? www.imfdb.org The price is nuts if it's used or worn out. Clyde |

What difference does it make what someone else is willing to pay for something?
If you wanted it and someone else outbid you, isn't that what auctions are all about?

From the bid history it looks like two bidders locked in mortal combat. I'm not sure what was going on but at least up until recently that gun would go for $475 to $550 locally.

I have one in near mint condition I bought for 500 bucks. Makes me wonder if I should sell the damn thing.

You must also keep in mind that just because the auction ended at that price does not mean the bidder actually went through with the deal. Many times people bid up items on GB and never actually buy them. It is very possible that the pistol never sold.

I bought my 4506-1 in the middle of the 2009 rush for $389.
I'd give serious consideration to selling it if I could make $1,100 profit on it...

I've been looking for a 4506 for two years already. That's insane though. Really.
Newbies are buying up everything for the ridiculous prices, people are going to keep pricing things at a ridiculous number. They don't know better. |

An item is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it, no more, no less.
Personally, I would not be willing to pay $1,450.00 for that gun. I do think things are a bit wacky right now.

I spend a lot of time at my friends gun shop. It's insane how many people are in there for their first gun. They're so easy to sell anything to. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that almost 90% of them that go into the shop are looking for their first gun. Rifle or handgun. They least sold are shotguns.

And let's not forget some people just have enough money that they don't care what they spend. If they want that item, they're gonna get it.

YES!! It is crazy. One of my most holiest of grail guns is the Model 4013TSW(Pre-Rail). I've come close but something always seems to
happen. Sigh...Right now there is a 4013TSW on Guns America, just like I want, with no rail. It looks to be in good condition. They're asking $899.00 for it! No box, one magazine! That's just outrageous to me. Of course, The seller wants to make as much as they can, but as bad as I want one, I have no problem passing on that deal!

I came upon a S&W 4506 w adj rear sight awhile back and it is my least used handgun I own ! Yes , it is a tank of a .45 semi auto and shoots almost all ammo reliably with adequate accuracy but for some reason it just doesn't seem that special ( at least not $1450 worth ) ! For a carry gun it is too heavy , for target use it is so so , but for home defense it would be a good choice but I own more favorite pistols for these duties ! That being said I'm not selling it until it hits $2000....J/K !

I guess I was considering the broader implications of a early 4506 ultimately selling for over $1400 and what that may mean for the shooting/RTKBA community now and down the line. Isn't that what forums like these are for? The discussion of such things? OR maybe another 9mm vs. 45acp debate is more your flavor. FYI... I was not a bidder on the auction. Have a blessed day.

WELL SHUCKS, my S&W M4506 is a Novak custom so it has to be worth at least a million bucks now[ that would be $ 1,000,000 ]. Your check for same gleefully accepted. I'll pay the shipping to your dealer.

A bit off topic...does anyone make night sights for the adjustable rear sight version of the 4506 ? I'd be happy to get just the front one that would be the right height and fit the dovetail slot !
