1861 springfield
I am new so tell me if I do something offensive.
I have bought an 1861 Springfield dated 1862 on the lock and barrel. Everything looks good with the exception of a proof in line above the V that looks like an outline of california. Can anyone please help me with this? Thanks, marlin6666 |

It's probably an eagle. Is it between the V and the rear of the barrel? Even in the best condition, that eagle stamp kind of looks like an elongated blob. I think that it's supposed to be the eagle's head, but it's more like a Rorschach blot to me.
A picture would definitely help.

1861 springfield
Thanks for the responses. I will have pics soon. I have "the U.S. Model 1861" book and the proofs are correct for the 1861 Springfield armory but the other proof is above the 3 normal marks. It is absolutely not the eagle.
