Bang Stick--Legality?

I've heard lots of people talk about bang sticks for diving and such. What applicable laws refer to these? Are they Short Barrelled Shotguns? AOWs? What?

Beats me, 29. Had one in .44 mag back in the '70s & every dive shop in The Keys had 'em from .223 to 12 ga - last trip to TKs & you can't find 'em anywhere. BTW, none were ever serial numbered, etc.

A 12 ga bang stick makes a handy all-purpose "removal tool." As far as effectivity, a contact-type 12 ga uses the expanding gases as much as the shot & no never mind about what size shot to use.

If you run across some info as to where to get, I'd sure appreciate a post follow-up. 20/12 ga = doesn't matter.

Coupla those mentioned appear to use a round to further project the spear head into the marine critter.

Looks complicated. I may be way off & should take a better look at their "methods."

Ones we used in the early '70s just did the contact method = push the stick against the critter & the bullet engaged 'em point-blank.

It worked.

I have seen these in SCUBA catalogs and always wondered how loud they would be under water. Sound travels better under water and a 44 mag would be pretty bad I would think. Just curious to those that have actually used one.

Depends on what you shoot. A contact shot up against the side of a goodly critter & there's not much boom at all (you're using the fish as a supressor

).

Using a 12 ga to break off a big ol' hunk of coral (I know, bad cess anymore) & you'll get a bigger bang as nothing's really trapping the gasses.
