Anyone shoot/own a 44 mag/44-40 Cattleman??

Wanted to get a gun pick-me-up.... So stopped in at the local gun shop to look around..

Saw a used 44 mag Cattleman with a spare 44-40 Cylinder.. The gun looked clean..

I was in the market for a 44 mag handgun for a while and was looking at a Ruger blackhawk.. But I do love the look of the cattleman and have a thing for guns with spare caliber cylinders..

So Any shoot one of these??? Reviews?? Comments?? Problems???

And would 500 for it be reasonable?? well 535 with tax...

I used to have one of these, I miss it pretty badly. I never had the courage to shoot any real stiff Magnums, but mine handled 240s at moderate speeds well. Definately preferred the Magnum cylinder. If you are looking for Magnum level horsepower, I would look elsewhere. I personally might have a hard time paying $500 for one. That price to me is too close to Ruger territory, but the Ubertis do have the Colt charm.

I've got a pair of Uberti Cattlemen in 44-40 that I shoot in CAS from time to time. They're good solidly built guns and should last you a long time. Even with a 44 Mag cylinder, I think $500 is a little high for a used one. New in the box single cylinder models go for $500 all the time. I'd give it a good inspection to make sure it had no problems, signs of excessive pressre or wear and do both cylinders fit? Then, if everything checked out I'd offer $350 and go as much as $400.

But, I'm a cheap..........er frugal

I do not have the ones you asked about, but I do have the .44spec and I love it. The only problem that I have found with them is the soft metal that some of the internals are made of. Overall, I think they are great guns.

Can't help you with the cattleman. My only 44 spec/44-40 convertable is a Colt Sheriffs model.

I have an old (18 years) Uberti .44 magnum Buckhorn revolver. I have put a couple thousand Remington and Winchester off the shelf magnum loads through it without a problem. In my opinion, $500 is a bit much. I have seen them go on Gunbroker for $250-$300. If you want a .44 mag to shoot heavy loads in go with the Ruger, but Ubertis will handle SAAMI loads fine.

Well many thanks for the reviews here,

So the 500 is high.. (And heck right now everything is crazy so it probable is)

But does not the extra 44/40 cylinder knock it up there the extra 100..

Again many thanks

The gun is worth what you want to pay for it. After all, it's your money. If you can afford it and you think $500 is a good price, buy it. You don't have to justify the price to anyone but yourself.

That goes along with "if you can afford it". I've been married going on thirteen years. There have been MANY times that I had the money for whatever I wanted at the time, but couldn't "afford" to buy it AND rent a hotel room too. I should have said "if your wife says you can afford it". How's that?
