Remington 6-1/2 small rifle primers for 223/5.56 AR ?

Can I use Remington 6-1/2 small rifle primers when reloading for the AR15 platform ? I just put 2k on back order and then came across some info saying not to use them in 5.56 . is this true ?

EDIT : What are those measurements for 6-1/2 , 7-1/2 , 9-1/2 ,

.

No, not really. Some do, Remington warns against it in all 223, not just the AR.

In rifle cartridges, the 6-1/2 small rifle primer should not be used in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington, 204 Ruger or the 223 Remington. The 7-1/2 BR is the proper small rifle primer for these rounds.

You can use them for small pistol if needed.

I haven't had to resort to using small rifle primers in handgun ammo, but I've read of plenty who have. I understand some don't even try to buy small pistol and only stock small rifle for both.

The only caveat is the cup may be too hard for reliable ignition in some "tuned" handguns that have had the mainspring reduced. They should work fine in service pistols.

The 6 1/2's have a softer cup than the other rem small rifle primers and they will pierce or crater badly with the pressures of the 223. I don't think they would be to hard for pistol
